Weekly communication for staff

Dear colleagues,

I am sure that you have seen the news and read the emails to confirm that industrial action will not be taking place this week, as the unions re-enter pay talks. Thanks to everyone affected who shared their position so that decisions could be made to support planning.

Thank you for your input at the staff meeting on Thursday where we discussed the Thematic Inspection. It is important to remember that most of our young people are delightful most of the time. However, it is critical that we are aware of the disrespectful way that they can speak to one another and that we intervene any time we hear anything unkind. If this reveals a bullying issue, please alert your PT or line manager so that it can be followed up and logged on SEEMiS. Thanks to everyone for input in building our community and ethos by promoting positive relationships, providing safe spaces, clubs and activities to help all of our young people feel included and safe.

As mentioned at the meeting, our S1 reported through the pupil council that they feel scared at the changeover periods going up/down the main stairs. Where you can, please could you be a out and about to reinforce calm and safe movement. I will do the same.

On Monday, we are selecting and sharing the sixteen young people who will secure a place on the Columba 1400 Leadership Academy for S4. 55 pupils have applied. To meet the criteria for funding, around half of the group will be from care experienced, young carer, or at risk in the community background. Our focus will be on putting together a group whose represent our school community and will benefit from the fantastic opportunity. I will update you as soon as the difficult decisions have been made. Please note, there are two sessions for the lucky 16 this week:

  • Tuesday 6th September (periods 3 & 4)

  • Friday 9th September(periods 3 & 4)

Massive thanks to Pam and Heather who will be delivering 'Memory Matters' workshops to our S4 and S5 pupils this week on Thursday and Friday. Pupils will be out of class for two periods by house. While this will be a short term inconvenience to classes, I am confident that it will have a highly positive impact on learners and support our broader focus on cognitive science to improve attainment.

As always, thanks for your hard work and professionalism.

Here's to another busy and positive week.

Elaine

Leadership Thoughts & Perspectives

This week I have selected an episode from #1minutewalk2work where Joe Sanfelippo explores the job we 'get to do' and its relationship with the list of things that we 'got to do'. He provides an interesting perspective on how the two relate.

...and an endless 'got to do' list!

Always reminding myself what a privilege it is to have the list.

Professional Learning Opportunities

Scottish Learning Festival Live in BHS

Wednesday 21 & Thursday 22 September

We are excited to announce our first learning festival, streaming live into BHS!

Sessions that align with our school priorities have been selected and will run live in the Upper and Lower Conference Rooms. Have a look what's on offer.

We want to help you attend these CLPL sessions but cover is very limited! Please try to arrange cover and release with one other to allow us to collectively attend the session/s we would like. Speak to Michelle and Amanda if your only options are official cover and we will try our best. Together, we can maximise our resources to help each other participate. Attending a session for only part of the time is fine too.

A sign up sheet will be in next week's BM.
