Weekly communication for staff

Dear colleagues,

A number of staff have approached me in person or via email to raise concerns about how they best support young people who are keen to change names and pronouns. A number of unintended consequences are beginning to arise and staff are looking for some help in dealing with it.

The LGBT+ working group and pupil support PTs are meeting on Monday period 2 to discuss this agenda:

  • consider and address staff worries

  • reflect on how we can all best support young people

  • reflect and agree how we best support staff

  • provide clear guidelines for staff based on legislation and GIRFEC principles.

We will feed back to you in due course.

Thanks to the positive behaviour group for their work in reviewing and updating our policy. Working with them, we have identified some priority areas that we can address immediately:

  1. Uniform

  2. Mobile phones

  3. Vaping

I will update S1-3 in assemblies this week and update parents and carers through this policies for parents communication. Please take a look - feedback welcome as always.

Looking to 2022-23, the SNC meet on Wednesday to discuss and begin to put together the calendar. Joining me on the SNC are Gordon MacKay, Elaine Johnstone, Matt Campbell and Amanda Short.

Another busy but exciting week as we interview for permanent ASN and Maths posts. It will cause a wee bit of disruption as we manage pupil panels, lessons and formal panels, so your support and help with that is very much appreciated.

Have a great week.

Elaine

Some Highlights from the last week

Thanks to Grace and Anna who took some S3 Drama pupils along with some of the alternative to exam leave students to Sky TV in Livingstone, where they took part in the Sky Academy. They learned about social media, fake news and put together this short news item. Take a look!

Thanks to the Expressive Arts team who have started their tour of our associated primary schools. Our P7s have been very excited and grateful for the input. Music next... Great to be expanding our transition activities.

Fabulous to see some of our S2 pupils at Drymen Primary encouraging and supporting reading. Freya Woodard, Murron Bunch, Sian Addison, and Leah Howe are leading a Paired Reading activity with P4. Not only is this contributing to promotion and improvement of literacy and contributing to our quest to secure Reading School accreditation, this project is building confidence in our PEF young people. Win - win - win!

Another £200 for CHAS thanks to Eden and Penny. Motivated by their work with YPI, the girls continued to raise funds for CHAS having made a fantastic connection with the charity.

CLPL Corner - Behaviour

I am sticking with the behaviour theme this week. I have found Dr Bill Roger's work very sensible and straightforward. Here are a couple of short videos that are easy to view and very helpful. They are 'Establishing trust to enable classroom co-operation' and 'Students who just say no'.

If you'd prefect to listen to a 20 minutes podcast, there is a link, bottom right, to an interview on Teacher Magazine.
