IMPORTANT - Confined TT Helpers Rota

Please read the following information and complete the survey form by clicking on this link.

How Events will be run this season

  • In recent years the club has relied solely on the efforts of Bruce Mackie to take on all timekeeping and organisational work at confined time trials. This position is not sustainable for the club, and not fair on Bruce who deserves the opportunity to ride in some of them himself. It’s worth remembering that when you are joining each year you are agreeing to the statement in the clubs membership conditions that “3. All club members are expected to make a small contribution of their time to supporting the club’s open events and general club operations”.

  • From 2014 onwards the club will operate a rota system to allocate helpers to each confined time trial event. This will only apply to time trials, as the APR events should be self organised by the riders who are there and don’t require specific helpers.

  • The rota will ensure that there are at least 3 (ideally 4) people allocated to help at every event to help with timekeeping, pushing off and marshalling. This rota will be set-up in advance of the first events.

  • Helpers can be riders, non-riding members or even non-members, so just because you don’t take part in club time trials there is nothing stopping you from helping out or getting other friends and family to help out.

  • No previous experience is required for any of the helpers and full instructions and equipment will be provided.

Eligibility to Ride in Confined events

  • Club members must have paid their subscription for the current year PRIOR to the start of an event.

  • Riders with a BC race licence may only ride if Perth United is their 1st club listed for road and track on their licence. Perth United is not insured for riders who have another club as their 1st claim.

  • New or non-members may ride 2 events (including APRs) prior to joining.

  • Club members must have volunteered to help out at one or more club confined time trials, in the current season, PRIOR to the start of an event. They must have provided at least 3 possible events where they would be willing to help (in order of preference) to the club secretary for inclusion on the rota.

How people will be allocated to events?

  • The aim is to spread the helpers out as evenly as possible, so that everyone gets the chance to ride as much as possible in the events that they want to ride in.

  • Ideally, people will only be allocated to one event, but that is dependent on the numbers coming forward. It is possible that people will have volunteered, but will not be required to actually help during the season. As long as people have offered to help in advance they will be included in the club competitions.

  • Wherever possible we will look to use as many non-riding helpers as possible to limit the number of riders who miss out on events.

How will this impact my position in club competitions?

  • For the club championships, BAR and Hill Climber competitions then you will miss the chance to gain points. However, so will everyone else that you are competing against. In the club championship and the BAR remember that the counting score is your best 9 results, so you can afford to miss some events already.

  • For the Handicap competition, anyone who helps out at a confined TT event will be awarded 50 points. That is only available once; you can’t score 50 points every week by helping out rather than riding!

  • There is also a one off award of 25 points in the Handicap competition for anyone who helps out (either before or on the day) with the 2 open events; the Eddie Morgan Road Race and the Open Time Trial.

What you need to do?

  • The committee will publish a rota of events and helpers that will be updated as required throughout the season. It will show who has been allocated to help at each event, and will be displayed on the club website.

  • Prior to the season all members (including those who are not riding in TTs) need to submit at least 3 events that they would be able to help in. You may put a preference order on them (e.g. your 1st preference is to help at Kinkell Bridge TT, your 2nd choice is Stanley Kinclaven and your 3rd choice is the Hilly 10), or not (e.g. put down 1st choice on all of them if you don’t mind which is picked).

  • You can also put down names of friends or family members that are able to help. This does not get you out of the rota yourself, but the more people that are helping the less chance of you having to help out yourself.

How do I submit my offers of help?

  • There will be an online survey that can be accessed through the club web site and the clubs Facebook page.

  • If you aren’t on the web you can put your offers in writing and pass them on to the club secretary or chairman.

Exemptions

  • This will apply to all senior (over 18) club members.

  • Juniors and Youths are not required to take part in the helpers rota.

  • Members who do not live in the UK and who only attend a few events annually may be exempted from helping out at the discretion of the committee.

What if I need to change the dates I’ve opted for?

  • We appreciate that most people can’t predict their availability right through to the end of the year and that you may need to swap dates nearer the time.

  • If you have offered to help on a particular date, but are subsequently unable to make it, you must provide notice to the club committee as far in advance as possible and at the same time update the rota with an offer to help on an alternative date.

  • The club will not tolerate people who deliberately withdraw offers of help without sufficient notice, or who withdraw offers to avoid having to sit out any events, and anyone deemed to being this will be penalised accordingly.
