Three Perth United riders ventured down to Bo’ness for the hotly anticipated Dig In At the Dock cyclocross race hosted by Dave Hamill and John McComisky of Pedal Power.
In a change to the usual series race format there was just one race for all categories and no under 12 races. That didn’t put off the spectators who turned out in huge numbers and with a tented village of stalls from various bike shops plus catering from Wild Rover Food there was a real buzz of excitement.
To hype up the crowd there was the usual over the top live commentary from Jammie and the Sambatastic drumming band provided the soundtrack to the race. To add extra crowd pleasing action the organisers installed the only-just-bunny-hop-able hurdles right in the middle of the tented village, which had the crowd baying for blood. They were not disappointed. Even during a practice lap Anne managed to provoke a loud ‘’ooohhhh” from crowd following a perfect face plant after a failed bunny hop attempt, she was not alone as many others suffered the same fate (note to Mark Champion, we need to work on this in training)!
Seeding was ‘interesting’ with 120 riders all mixed together for one start but by some miracle, or should that be skill, all the Perth riders made a great start with Ally getting into the top 10 early on. As the race progressed, the tough muddy conditions and cobbles provided a truly epic test of fitness and cyclocross skills.

Commonwealth Games hopeful Rab Wardell (Alpine Bikes/Trek), international rider Gareth Montgomerie (GT Racing) and last years winner James McCallum (Rapha-Condor.JLT) pulled out a good lead on the rest of the field and finished in that order with Eileen Roe beating most of the men to take the ladies prize.
The Perth United riders acquitted themselves well with no major mishaps, punctures or mechanicals and all thoroughly enjoyed another days cyclocross racing, and with some truly fantastic raffle prizes handed out at the end this is definitely one for the diary next year.
