The PUCC Youth A team took all the podium places at the first of the Dumfries Criterium series held on Sunday. The field broke up quite early on with a lead group of about 10 riders that included 4 of the 5 PUCC team. There then followed a master class in race tactics lead by Lewis Champion.
Each took a turn to go off the front and force the remaining riders to chase while the three PUCC riders just sat there. Finally Fraser Martin broke clear and held a good distance for a couple of laps that wasn't coming down, so he went into time trial mode and just stayed out there forcing the chase from other teams if they wanted the win.
Well it went on and on for lap after lap with only two riders (one Dundee and one ERC) seemingly wanting to work to bring him back. They couldn't do it and Fraser held a slender 10 secoond gap until 2 laps remaining when others finally decided to join in and cut his lead in half by the bell. Fraser dug deep and when they came into sight out of the final bend and on to the finishing straight, they were almost on him. He kicked again and maintained his winning margin to the line, with Hector Lancaster and Mark McGuire and taking a comfortable second and third in the sprint ahead of the tired out Dundee chaser, who unfortunately prevented the clean sweep by pipping the PUCC master mind, Lewis Champion, into fourth place. Although, it was reported that Lewis' sprint was hampered by a lapped rider. Matty Peters rounded off the team finishers with a valiant effort in the second chasing group. Well done to all.
