As soon as I noticed the speedometer and reached for the brake pedal, I looked up in time to see the blue lights of a police car in front of me, preparing to whip a U-turn to get behind me. Crap. “I assume it’s because my speed crept up a bit coming down this hill, officer.” (I’d learned by this time that playing dumb does no good, and often irritated the officer.) After examining my license, registration, and insurance card, and calling for a wants & warrants check, he “invited” me to accompany him back to his cruiser. (In that day, the early ‘90s, that was the standard procedure in the Midwest. Haven’t been back there in nearly 20 years, so it may have changed.)
