Prayer - Your Foundation for Success

Prayer - Your Foundation for Success

Twenty Principles From The Lord’s Prayer

The Lord’s Prayer (Matthew 6:5-13). This prayer is actually a teaching tool Jesus used to show His disciples how to pray, and it’s a foundational place for us to learn hot to be effective in prayer.

Matthew 6:5-13 (New King James Version)

The Model Prayer

5. “And when you pray, you shall not be like the hypocrites. For they love to pray standing in the synagogues and on the corners of the streets, that they may be seen by men. Assuredly, I say to you, they have their reward.

6. But you, when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly.

7. And when you pray, do not use vain repetitions as the heathen do. For they think that they will be heard for their many words.

8. “Therefore do not be like them. For your Father knows the things you have need of before you ask Him.

9. In this manner, therefore, pray: Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

10. Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

11. Give us this day our daily bread.

12. And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.

13. And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.

1. Prayer is not about impressing people. (Do not be like the hypocrites.)

Jesus begins His teaching by telling the disciples that prayer is not something w do to try to impress others. Our spiritual rewards do not come from men, but from GOD.

2. Prayer is not about impressing GOD. (Your Father knows…before you ask.)

Jesus let His disciples know that prayer is not about exhausting yourself with repetitious words and phrases in an attempt to get God to listen to you. As God’s children, we must understand that we have a covenant with Him through Jesus. Prayer is not about being and pleading with God, but is instead about exercising the confidence we have in His love or us. God already knows what we need. Our prayers simply put us in a position to hear and receive from him. A great comparison of godly prayer and prayers of vain repetition can found in 1 Kings 18: 20-39, in the Old Testament.

3. Prayer should come from the heart. (In this manner, therefore, pray.)

As we study prayer, we should keep in mind that God is not interested in vain repetitions. The Lord’s Prayer is not really something God wants us to repeat over and over. Jesus said we should pray in this manner. He is providing us with principles we can apply to our own heartfelt prayers.

4. Approach God as Father. (Our Father)

When we approach God, we should remember that He is not just some distant being He is our Father. He loves us and is looking out for out best interests. We are coming to Him as covenant children--not outsiders. (Hebrews 4:16)

Hebrews 4:16 (New King James Version)

16. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

5. Consider your fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. (Our Father.)

Notice Jesus included the word “our” in the prayer. We can too easily get into the habit of praying only for ourselves without thinking of one another. However, God is not just “my” Father and he is not just “your” Father. He is “OUR” Father, and he wants the best for all His children. This is one reason we cannot ask God to take something away from someone else and give it to us. God has enough to bless everyone!

6. Recognize God’s position of power and ability. (In Heaven.)

We must keep in mind that the God we are praying to is in heaven. He is not limited to space and time. He had a clear view of all that is going on in the earth. Nothing catches Him by surprise. He is the Almighty God, and He has the power to work all things together for our good (Romans 8:28).

Romans 8:28 (New King James Version)

And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose

7. Come to God in an attitude of worship. (Hallowed be your Name.)

God is all-powerful and His Name is holy. When we come to him we should recognize His greatness and treat His Name with holy reverence. We never treat prayer casually, because in prayer we have an audience with the Creator of the entire universe! As Psalm 100: 3-5 says, (New King James Version)

3. "Know that the LORD, He is God;

it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves;

we are His people and the sheep of His pasture.

4. Enter into His gates with thanksgiving,

And into His courts with praise.

Be thankful to Him, and bless His name.

5. For the LORD is good;

His mercy is everlasting,

and His truth endures to all generations."

8. We can pray to advance God’s Kingdom. (Your kingdom come.)

Jesus said we should pray “Thy Kingdom come.” According to Bible commentator Albert Barnes, the world kingdom here means “reign,” This petition is the expression of our desire that God may “reign” everywhere, until the world shall be filled with His glory (Psalm 72:19). Praying for your friends and family members who need to receive Jesus as Lord is a great way to pray “Thy Kingdom come.”

Psalm 72:19 (New King James Version)

And blessed be His glorious name forever! And let the whole earth be filled with His glory. Amen and Amen.

9. We can pray God’s perfect will. (Your will be done.)

Many people pray, “Lord, If it be Thy will.” But notice Jesus said we should pray “Your will be done.” When we know God’s will, we can confidently pray that it be done. Gods will is found in His Word. And the great news is that God’s will is perfectly has a lot of valuable things in it for you (salvation, life, peace, joy, healing, prosperity and more)!

10. Earth should line up with heaven. (On earth as it is in heave.)

Praying that God’s “will be done on earth as it is in heaven” is to pray that His law, His reveled will, may be obeyed and loved. This is a great way to pray for our nation and our leaders. We want them to do things God’s way and not just follow their own plans. God’s will is perfectly obeyed in heaven, and we should pray that it is obeyed on earth. God’s ultimate will is for men and women to receive salvation (John 6:40)

John 6:40 (New King James Version)

And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

11. God wants to meet our needs. (Give us this day)

God want to meet our personal needs! The key is to put Him First and then Trust He will meet our needs!

(Matthew 6:33) (New King James Version)

"But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you."

The problem many people have is that they are focused on how big their needs are. They seem to forget how big their God is and how well able He is to perform. That’s why it’s important to follow Jesus’ example and start our prayers by worshiping God and giving glory and honor to him. When we do this, we will find we don’t usually need huge faith to get results, we simple need to trust and have confidence in Almighty God.

(Matthew 17:20)! (New King James Version)

"So Jesus said to them, “Because of your unbelief; for assuredly, I say to you, if you have faith as a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you."

12. We should look to Him as our daily provider. (Forgive us our debts.)

Our reliance on God never ends. We must daily trust Him to be our supplier. When we put God first, we never lack for anything (Psalm 37:25)! In Fact, God is able to richly supply not just my needs, but our needs. He has enough to bless our entire families and those around us. God wants to use us to bless others!

Psalm 37:25 (New King James Version)

I have been young, and now am old; Yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken, Nor his descendants begging bread.

13. Run into God’s open hands of forgiveness. (Forgive us our debts.)

Jesus paid the price for our sins more then 2,000 years ago. Because f this we can stand clean before God! So when we make mistakes, we should run to God instead of running from Him. According to 1 John 1:8-9 “8. If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. 9. If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” Asking for the Lord’s forgiveness opens the door for Him to empower us with His grace so we can over come any sins that would hinder our relationship with him and stop prayers from being answered (Hebrews 4:16) "Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need."

14. Get rid of unforgiveness and strife. (As we forgive our debtors.)

Forgiving others is crucial to having our prayers answered and receiving from God. The blessing of God can’t move in an atmosphere of hatred and bitterness. The good news is God chose to forgive us when we didn’t deserve it. (Ephesians 2). Now, since we have experienced God’s forgiveness, we are able to forgive others. (Ephesians 4:32). "And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you."

15. With God we can resist temptation. (Do not lead us into temptation.)

We are assured in James 1:13 that God never tempts us with evil. Therefore, this is really an expression of our need for God’s help in resisting temptation. We are daily attacked with temptations. From our own flesh and from outside influences. The good new is God understands what we are going through, and he offering His grace so we can overcome temptation.

(Hebrews 4:12-16)

12. For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

13. And there is no creature hidden from His sight, but all things are naked and open to the eyes of Him to whom we must give account. Our Compassionate High Priest

14. Seeing then that we have a great High Priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession.

15. For we do not have a High Priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but was in all points tempted as we are, yet without sin.

16. Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.

16. God will deliver us from evil. (Deliver us fro the evil one.)

Evil comes in many forms, but its source is Satan. Whether it’s sickness, emotional pain, physical danger, spiritual torment or the consequences of our own bad choices, God is able to deliver us! (See Psalm 103:3; Luke 4:18; Galatians 1:13; 2 Thessalonians 3:2; 2 Timothy 3:11, 4:17-18; Hebrews 2:15 and 2 Peter 2:9.)

17. Remember that God has supreme authority. (Yours is the kingdom.)

The next three principles are aspects of worship and thanks. After we lift our needs before God, we focus our attention on Him--our source of supply. As we close our prayer we should cast all our cares and anxieties onto God because we recognize that He has the power and authority to move on our behalf (1 Peter 5:7). We trust Him because He is ultimately in control and in Him we always win!

(1 John 4:4)

“You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.”

18. Remember that God has the power to perform. (And the Power.)

With God all things are possible! When we pray, we must never doubt that God can do the miraculous on our behalf. Jesus said in Mark 9:23, New King James Version) “Jesus said to him, “If you can believe, all things are possible to him who believes.” We are fully persuaded that what He has promised. He is able to also perform (Romans 4:21).

19. God Is glorified in answered prayer. (And the glory forever.)

One blessing of answered prayer is the fact that it is a testimony of God’s goodness. The Bible says God is able to do exceeding abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, and He will receive glory throughout all the ages to come (Ephesians 3:20-21). We should use answered prayer as an opportunity to tell people about God’s goodness.

(Deuteronomy 8:18.)

“And you shall remember the LORD your God, for it is He who gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore to your fathers, as it is this day.”

In fact, testimonies are one of our greatest tools for sharing Jesus with others!

(Luke 7:22)!

“Jesus answered and said to them, “Go and tell John the things you have seen and heard: that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, the poor have the gospel preached to them.”

20. We believe we receive when we pray. (AMEN)

The word amen is not just a religious thing to say at the end of the a prayer, it means “so be it.” After we finish our prayers, we should have confidence that what we have prayed is coming to past.

(Mark 11:23-24)

"For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says.

24 Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them."

We should live life from that point onward like it is done. We don’t need to spend another day in worry or fear! We don’t have to question whether or not God heard us (1 John 5:14.) “Confidence and Compassion in Prayer. Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.” We must simply allow the peace of God to fill our hearts and minds as we keep our trust in Him.

(Philippians 4:6-8).

“6. Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God;

7. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Meditate on These Things

8. Finally, brethren, whatever things are true, whatever things are noble, whatever things are just, whatever things are pure, whatever things are lovely, whatever things are of good report, if there is any virtue and if there is anything praiseworthy—meditate on these things.”

We encourage you to continue studying these principles in your Bible and send time thinking about how you can use them in your own prayer life. Your prayer don’t always have to include all 20 principles, but all of them will be useful at some point. When your prayers are bases on Jesus’ example, you can expect results!

5 KEYS FOR RECEIVING FROM GOD

Using the following principles as a foundation for your stand of faith. Likewise, when your faith is founded on God’s Word, you will have success!

1. Present the Promises (Present Your Case). “For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart” (Hebrews 4:12).

A. Write your petition out as your Word - based declaration of faith. (Philippians 4:6.)

B. Present it to the High Priest of your confession, Jesus. (Hebrews 3:1)

4. Prepare to Receive. : Let us hold fast our profession” (Hebrews 4:14).

A. Let every request be accompanied by your thanksgiving to the Lords for His faithfulness to fulfill His promises. (Philippians 4:6;

2 Corinthians 1:20) “For all the promises of God in Him are Yes, and in Him Amen, to the glory of God through us.”
