Data on mercury exposure in Austria have been lacking so far. The results of two recent studies revealed the causal factors underlying Hg accumulation. In the above mentioned studies, neither breast milk nor blood concentrations exceeded critical levels. Toxicological implications of long-term low-level Hg exposure, however, remain uncertain, especially for the susceptible infant.
