Abstract: Mineral composition of mysid statoliths. The mineral composition of statoliths was studied in 74 species of Mysidae on a wide systematic and geographic range by means of X ray diffraction analysis. Besides already known types, mineralized with fluorite or vaterite (or calcite in fossil specimens), statoliths without any crystalline component were found. Correlations at an ecological, taxonomic, and biogeographic level are established. SEM microanalyses in 10 species indicate the presence of a large variety of elements, including heavy metals very rare in sea water such as Cr and Y.
