Biometry of mysid statoliths.
The comparative study of statolith diameters bases on 135 species. Significant correlations are evident with body length, taxonomic position, mineral composition of the lith, development of eyes, and ecological parameters such as salinity or depth. The effect of eye development points to the well known role of the statocyst for visual perception. Accordingly, lith size appears reduced under reduced ambient light conditions. The effect of salinity is indicative of reduced lith weight in less dense medium. A new method based on X2 is used for statistical definition of statolith formula (2+3+1+7+ m in Diamysis bahirensis).
