Act Three


SCENE ONE: GRADELLINO and ISABELLA


Isabella laments not finding Gradellino after giving him the ring so he can get money to survive. Gradellino arrives and tells her about the trick Brighella played on him. She scolds him for getting involved with her enemy's servant. They leave to find him. 


SCENE TWO: BRIGHELLA and the aforementioned


Brighella boasts about the trick he played on Gradellino. Gradellino and Isabella confront him, and they take back the ring. Brighella flees, and they remain. 


SCENE THREE: Two Soldiers with a table, OTTAVIO, a pen, a drum, and the aforementioned, and ARDELIA


They have a scene where they ask who wants to enlist. Some soldiers come forward to enlist, one named Te l'ho detto (I told you so), another Lo sapete (You know it), and another Parla forte (Speak loudly). They all enlist. Gradellino and Isabella enlist as well. Ottavio is impressed by Isabella's military discourse and says he wants her as his comrade. He steps aside. Ardelia enlists after a while. Isabella says she needs to speak privately with Captain Ottavio, who dismisses everyone else. They remain alone. 


SCENE FOUR: ISABELLA and OTTAVIO


Isabella thanks Ottavio for making her his comrade. She reveals that she is brother to Isabella, his former love. She has good news for him and gives him a letter. Ottavio receives the letter and learns that Isabella is willing to love him. She ran away from home and wants to go to war with him. She will wait for him outside the city gates. Delighted, Ottavio agrees to meet her at the designated location. 


SCENE FIVE: The two PARENTS


They arrive, expressing their intuition that soldiers are being recruited there. They come to see if they can find their daughters. They hear that the Captain is outside the city and leave to find him. 


SCENE SIX: ORAZIO and GRADELLINO, ARDELIA on the side


Gradellino complains about the war, saying he wants to go to the place where Isabella wanted to talk to Ottavio. Orazio overhears this conversation without saying anything. Gradellino and Ardelia leave. 


SCENE SEVEN: OTTAVIO and ISABELLA


Ottavio appears at the location Isabella assigned to them and expresses his desire to make their escape a reality. They have a romantic scene, and Ottavio sits down and falls asleep. Isabella finds him asleep, expresses anger, and reaches for a weapon to kill him. 


SCENE EIGHT: ORAZIO without a beard and the aforementioned, and the PARENTS


Orazio intervenes and opposes Isabella. She recognizes him and is astonished. Ardelia also opposes Isabella. At that moment, Ottavio wakes up, reaches for a weapon, and they recognize each other. They reconcile. Ottavio thanks Ardelia for defending him and takes her as his wife. Orazio takes Isabella. The parents arrive and find everything resolved. It ends with a wedding celebration.
