Say (to the believers), “The spoils of war belong to Allaah (who places them where Allaah wills) and the messenger (of Allaah who divides the spoils of war according to Allaah’s command) so keep your duty to Allaah, reconcile your differences in this matter, and obey Allaah and His (Allaah’s) messenger, if you are believers (in Allaah).”

Comment 1. The battle of Badr was on the 17 Ramadan 2 AH, 17 March 624 CE, 17 March 624 AD.
In the battle of Badr the stone idol worshippers were sent from Mecca to fight the believers of Allaah in Yathrib Arabia later known as Medina Arabia today in Madinah Saudi Arabia).
Comment 2. The battle of Badr was the first large scale battle between the stone idol worshipers of Mecca and the believers of Allaah from Yathrib.

Quran 8:8 Koran 8:8 Verse 8:8 Ayah 8:8 Ayat 8:8 Aya 8:8 – So that He (Allaah) might make clear the truth and show what was false, even if the guilty (the wrongdoers among the believers) disliked it.
Comment 1. Allaah commanded that the believers of Allaah in Yathrib fight against the armed stone idol worshipping fighters coming from Mecca instead of fighting the lightly defended caravan of merchandise to show the believers that they could defeat the stone idol fighters from Mecca.

Quran 3:13 Verse 3:13 There has already been a sign (from Allaah) for you in the two armies that met (the Muslims of Yathrib Arabia today Medina Madinah Saudi Arabia and the Stone worshippers of Mecca Arabia today Makkah Saudi Arabia, in the battle of Badr where) one was fighting in the cause of Allaah and the other had no faith (in Allaah). They (who had faith) saw with their own eyes that those (without faith) appeared to be fewer in number but they were really much larger in number. Allaah supports with His (Allaah’s) victory whom He (Allaah) pleases. Surely, in this is a lesson for those who have eyes to see (and understand). (See Quran 8:44)
Quran 8:44 Verse 8:44 And (remember) when you met (the Stone idol worshipper’s army that had no faith in Allaah on the Day of the battle of Badr), He (Allaah) showed them to you as few in your eyes and He (Allaah) made you appear as few in their eyes (so that both armies were not afraid of each other and they would continue with what each intended to do), so that Allaah might accomplish what had been decreed (by Allaah to test your faith in Allaah). Quran 3:124 Verse 3:124 (Remember) when you (Prophet Muhammad) said to the faithful, "Is it not enough for you that your Lord (Allaah) should help you with three thousand angels (that Allaah specially) sent down (from heaven to assist you in the battle of Badr)?"

Why did Prophet Muhammad flee Makkah?
Before the revelation of Quran 8:12 Prophet Muhammad escaped the assassination plot of the stone idol worshippers by secretly leaving his home at night in Mecca Arabia today Makkah Saudi Arabia and finding safety in Yathrib, Arabia later Medina Arabia today Madinah Saudi Arabia. Later the stone idol worshippers from Mecca travelled towards Yathrib and the first small fights resulted.
Comment 4. The believers of Allaah fled their homes in Mecca Makkah Arabia because of religious persecution and established new homes in the safety of Yathrib later called Medina Madinah. The believers of Allaah in Yathrib talked about taking a Meccan caravan that was travelling with merchandise from Syria to Mecca Makkah. But instead of that Allaah made Allaah’s believers meet the fighters from Mecca Makkah that had been sent to protect the caravan. Those Meccan fighters had been ordered back to Mecca Makkah when the caravan was safe but the leader from Mecca Makkah was determined to continue to Yathrib. This would be the first large scale battle involving the believers of Allaah in what is called the battle of Badr.
Comment 5. Allaah instructed Allaah’s angels to intercede in the battle of Badr on the side of the believers of Allaah to punish the stone idol worshippers. Angels who are under Allaah’s command bring confidence to the heart of those who believe in Allaah.

Comment 1. Can a trial that effects everyone be avoided?
It has been said that the way to avoid such a trial is to stand against the evil that would cause such a trial to fall on everyone.
One example is shown in the different results that came by either supporting or opposing the evil of treachery against the prophet of Allaah in Yathrib.
In Yathrib lived both the Muslim community and several Jewish tribes.
The different Jewish tribes in Yathrib were not united in defending all the people in Yathrib whenever the town was threatened by the forces of the stone idol worshippers of Mecca Makkah.
Time after time, one Jewish tribe and later another one and later still another one showed treachery towards the safety of Yathrib by changing their support from the Muslims in Yathrib and supporting the stone idol worshippers of Mecca Makkah.
Each Jewish tribe in Yathrib acted in its own interest.
The Jewish tribes in Yathrib were unable to cut their long existing social and economic relationship with the idol worshippers of Mecca Makkah even though they saw the punishment that was resulting as Jewish tribe after Jewish tribe was being punished each time they betrayed the security of Yathrib by their support of the idol worshippers in Mecca Makkah.
The result was a trial that fell on everyone both the good people and the bad people that would finally result after the death of Prophet Muhammad in the expulsion of the Jewish people from Arabia today Saudi Arabia.

1b. The history of Muslims and Jews in Yathrib Arabia and the stone idol worshippers in Makkah.
Prophet Muhammad brought the laws of Allaah into focus with new Muslims whose main concern was Allaah and doing what was legally correct while the Jewish tribes were more attached to their old relationship with the stone idol worshippers in Mecca Makkah.
The different Jewish tribes in Yathrib had long existed in a social and economic relation with the idol worshippers of Mecca Makkah before the arrival of Prophet Muhammad.
The Muslims of Yathrib had trusted the Jews in Yathrib as brothers in the religion of Allaah however the different Jewish tribes in Yathrib were unable to make their belief in Allaah and their relationship with the new Muslim believers more important than their old social and economic ties with the stone idol worshippers of Mecca Makkah who had long been their source of customers and wealth and relationship.
The failure of lenient punishment on Jewish tribes was a lesson to Prophet Muhammad that can be understood in the following revelations:
Quran 8:27 Verse 8:27 All you who believe, Do not be disloyal to Allaah and His (Allaah’s) messenger, nor knowingly betray the trusts (in religion) that have been given to you (while you know the consequences of such betrayal).
Quran 8:56 Verse 8:56 The ones (the different tribes of Jews in Yathrib) with whom you make a treaty (of mutual support and protection for both the Muslims and the Jews of Yathrib) and they (the Jews of Yathrib) break the treaty every time and they have no fear (of Allaah in their treachery).
Quran 8:57 Verse 8:57 If you meet them (those who break their treaties) in war, then deal with them (those who have broken the treaty) so that others shall remember and be deterred from following them (meaning, so that others are deterred from breaking their agreements with you).
Quran 8:58 Verse 8:58 And if you fear treachery from any people then be fair (be just) to them by telling them that they have broken the treaty (so there is no treaty between you). Allaah does not love those that are treacherous (meaning Allaah does not love those that do not keep their word, their promises, their agreements and their treaty).
Note 1. Allaah does not love the people who do not keep their promises.
Quran 8:71 But if they intend to betray you (Prophet Muhammad) then (know that) they already betrayed Allaah before. So He (Allaah) gave (you, Prophet Muhammad) power over them. Allaah is all knowing and all wise).
Note 1. Those who betrayed or were disloyal to Prophet Muhammad had betrayed Allaah by deserting their belief in Allaah.
1c. Why did Allaah forgive the Children of Israel for breaking their covenant with Allaah?

Quran 5:71 Verse 5:71 They (the Children of Israel) thought there would be no punishment (for breaking the covenant with Allaah by not heeding, listening, believing, and accepting Allaah’s messengers such as Prophet Jesus Isa who called for righteousness and forbade evil) so they became blind and deaf (to their agreement with Allaah) and afterward Allaah turned (in mercy) and forgave them (the Children of Israel because a new generation does not carry the sin of past generations and because no person carries the sin that was committed by another person). Now many of them (the Children of Israel who are the Jews of Yathrib Arabia) are again blind and deaf (to their agreement with Allaah by not heeding, listening, believing, and accepting Allaah’s message through Prophet Muhammad to do what is good and reject what is bad). Allaah sees what they do.
Note 1. Allaah is the most merciful and the most forgiving.
Note 2. Whenever the children of Israel repented Allaah forgave them because Allaah is the most merciful and the most forgiving.
Note 3. Sins from evil deeds that were done by earlier generations is not passed on to the souls of a new generation of the children of Israel.

1d. Why did Allaah order Muslims to forgive the Children of Israel?

Even though they (many among the Jews of Arabia) do that (treachery against you), (you should) pardon (forgive) their bad deeds and forgive them (like you would like Allaah to pardon your bad deeds and forgive you in the hereafter). Allaah loves those who do good (deeds to other people).

When a people stop fighting against Muslims then Muslims must stop fighting see Quran 2:192 – 2:193).
Comment 1. When fighting stops so that peace can start you must stop fighting and start peace.
Quran 2:191 Verse 2:191 And (you can) kill them (those who fight you in battle) wherever you find them (fighting you) and drive them out from where they drove you out (to reclaim your territory) because to be persecuted (by the stone idol worshippers in Makkah) is worse than being killed (because Allaah loves those who defend themselves against the persecution of their religion) but do not fight them at the Holy Mosque inside Makkah unless they fight you there first. If they (the stone idol worshippers in Makkah) attack you (there first) then you can kill them (there in battle).This is the result for those without faith in Allaah (if they fight against Muslims without a just cause).

After the children of Israel had safely walked across the parted waters of the Red Sea, Allaah returned the parted waters and drowned the pursuing Pharaoh Firon and his army.

Comment 2. Why were many Jews reported to have been killed in the last Jewish betrayal in Yathrib by the last Jewish tribe in Yathrib Arabia later known as Medina Arabia today in Madinah Saudi Arabia?
Ka'b ibn Asad the leader of Banu Qurayza the last Jewish tribe in Yathrib was found with Huyayy ibn Akhtab who was the chief of the Banu Nadir a Jewish tribe that had been exiled out of Yathrib by Prophet Muhammad previously. Banu Nadir were now fighting with the stone idol worshippers of Mecca Makkah against the Muslims in Yathrib.
Banu Nadir and its leader Huyayy ibn Akhtab who had previously been exiled had now returned and fought with the stone idol worshippers against the Muslims in Yathrib and now Huyayy ibn Akhtab was found to be in the home of the leader of Banu Qurayza in Yathrib.
Ka'b ibn Asad the leader of Banu Qurayza was allowed to choose a judge for the crime of betrayal.
Ka'b ibn Asad did not choose Prophet Muhammad as his judge but he chose another man and agreed to accept that mans judgement.
That man named Sa'd ibn Mu'adh used the Torah Taurat law of death for betrayal for the men who faught against the Muslims and freedom from punishment for the women and children because they were not fighting.
If the Jewish leader had chosen Prophet Muhammad as his judge it would have been a sign of belief and Quran 5:13 Verse 5:13 would have guided Prophet Muhammad as the word of Allaah willed.
However Ka'b ibn Asad the leader of the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayza was guided to choose the judgement of death in the Torah Taurat instead of the judgement of mercy and forgiveness in the Koran Quran.
In the same way the leaders Ka'b ibn Asad of Banu Qurayza and Huyayy ibn Akhtab of Banu Nadir had been guided to support the stone idol worshippers in Mecca Makkah against the Muslim believers of Allaah in Yathrib.

Quran 8:61 applies to the Jewish tribe of Banu Qurayza in Yathrib during the siege of Yathrib by the stone idol worshipper army of Mecca Makkah in the Battle of the Trench when Banu Qurayza was thought to be making a secret deal with the idol worshipper army of Mecca Makkah. Both the Muslims of Yathrib and the Jews of Yathrib were under that same siege. See Quran 8:56 comments.
Battle of the Trench (Battle of the Trench 31 March 627 AD, 31 March 627 CE, Shawwal 5 AH, Ghazwah al-Khandaq, Battle of Ahzab, Battle of the Confederates, Siege of Medina Madinah, Siege of Yathrib, Ghazwah al-Ahzab, The battle of the Muslims in Yathrib against Al-Ahzab which were the combined forces against the Muslims in Yathrib Arabia were the Banu Quraysh tribe of the Arab stone idol worshippers of Mecca Makkah Arabia and their Arab allies and the Arab tribe of Banu Ghatafan north of Yathrib Arabia and the Jewish tribe of Banu Nadir of Khaybar Arabia and others. During the battle of the trench in Yathrib Banu Nadir started negations to convince Banu Qurayza in Yathrib Arabia to join the combined forces against the Muslims, the battle of "al-Khandaq" known as the Trench, the battle of the ditch).
Comment 2. Quran 8:61 also applies to the stone idol worshippers from Mecca Makkah as indicated in Quran 8:19 and Quran 8:38 – 8:40.
Quran 8:62 Koran 8:62 Verse 8:62 Ayah 8:62 Ayat 8:62 Aya 8:62 And if they want to betray you (Prophet Muhammad), then (know that) Allaah is sufficient for you. It is He (Allaah) who supports you with His (Allaah’s) help and with the believers. – (Continued in Quran 8:63).
Note 1. Quran 8:71 Verse 8:71 But if they intend to betray you (Prophet Muhammad) then (know that) they already betrayed Allaah before. So He (Allaah) gave (you, Prophet Muhammad) power over them. Allaah is all knowing and all wise.
Quran 8:63 Koran 8:63 Verse 8:63 Ayah 8:63 Ayat 8:63 Aya 8:63 – And (regarding the believers Allaah has) united their hearts. If (Prophet Muhammad) you had spent all that is on the Earth you could not have united their hearts but Allaah has united them (the believers). Allaah is mighty and wise.
Quran 8:64 Koran 8:64 Verse 8:64 Ayah 8:64 Ayat 8:64 Aya 8:64 O Prophet (Muhammad), Allaah is sufficient for you and those believers who follow you.
Quran 8:65 Koran 8:65 Verse 8:65 Ayah 8:65 Ayat 8:65 Aya 8:65 (Allaah wants Prophet Muhammad to learn mercy and forgiveness by experiencing the fear and doubt of his men when it is revealed by Allaah) O Prophet (Muhammad), encourage the believers to fight (with you the stone idol worshippers from Makkah). If there are twenty steadfast (men with you) they shall overcome two hundred (men), and if there are one hundred (steadfast men with you) they shall overcome a thousand of those who disbelieve, because they (the disbelievers) are a people that do not understand (that all power lies with Allaah the creator. The prophet understands this but Allaah will show that the men of Prophet Muhammad do not fully understand this because many are new to the religion of Allaah).
Comment 1. Those who do not understand that the Quran has verses of history that include history about fighting translate the Quran as if those commands are for me and you to fight today.
No those are not commands for me and you to fight today.
They are commands given by Allaah to Prophet Muhammad addressed to those people who lived in the time of the prophet 1400 years ago.
We need to know that the verses about fighting are connected to issues that occurred in history.

Quran 8:66 Koran 8:66 Verse 8:66 Ayah 8:66 Ayat 8:66 Aya 8:66 (In Quran 8:65 Allaah willed for Prophet Muhammad to experience the fear and doubt of his men and Allaah will now teach Prophet Muhammad that fear and doubt in men is removed not by a harsh response but by mercy and forgiveness when it is revealed by Allaah who is the most merciful and the most kind that) now Allaah has lightened your burden (to convince people that one man can defeat 10 men as revealed in Quran 8:65) because He (Allaah) knows that there is a weakness (of fear and doubt) in you (to fight ten times your number). So (with mercy and kindness and forgiveness tell them) if you are one hundred steadfast (men) they shall overcome two hundred, and if there are a thousand (steadfast men with you) they shall overcome two thousand by the permission of Allaah. Allaah is with the steadfast.
Comment 1. The same teaching in Quran 8:65 – 8:66 is found in Quran 3:159.
Quran 3:159 Verse 3:159 So because of the mercy of Allaah you (Prophet Muhammad) dealt gently with them (who disobeyed your orders at the battle of Uhud), If you (Prophet Muhammad) had been rude and harsh in your heart then surely they would have dispersed from around you (and abandoned the religion of Allaah but they did not do that because of the goodness Allaah has put in your heart which is an excellent example to them of the religion of Allaah). So pardon them (for having left their positions in the battlefield to collect war booty) and ask forgiveness (from Allaah) for them and consult with them about the matter (which occurred at the battle of Uhud). Then when you have (all) decided the matter then put your trust in Allaah. Allaah loves those who put their trust (in Allaah).
Comment 2. If Allaah wills one man could defeat 10 men (as is the ratio of men in Quran 8:65) but because of the weakness in man that causes fear and doubt, Allaah removed that fear and doubt through a new revelation saying that 5 men can defeat 10 men (in Quran 8:66).
Comment 3. The development of the religion of Islam required that Prophet Muhammad and his follows experienced what Allaah had planned for them to experience. The Quran gives an understanding of some of the historical events that explain different verses in the Quran.
Comment 4. If a single Quran was presented to humans as a complete book at one time then it would have been a revelation of perfection from heaven without an opportunity for human experience. The Quran is revealed as the life time experience of Prophet Muhammad. It is a book of revelation from Allaah that includes a lifetime experience of humans that are revealed by Allaah step by step.
Comment 5. Quran 8:67 is a verse that is explained further in Quran 47:4 when Allaah revealed that prisoners of war could be freed without any condition. See more in the Quran 8:67 comments.
Quran 8:67 Koran 8:67 Verse 8:67 Ayah 8:67 Ayat 8:67 Aya 8:67 A Prophet does not take prisoners of war (to free them for a ransom) until he has subdued the land. You desire the temptations of the world (ransom money for freeing the captives), but Allaah desires (for you) the Hereafter. Allaah is mighty and wise.
Comment 1. Quran 8:67 is explained further in Quran 47:4 which revealed the command from Allaah which also allows prisoners of war to be freed without any conditions.
Quran 47:4 Verse 47:4 When you meet (in the field of battle) those who disbelieve (the idol worshippers of Mecca Makkah), strike (their) necks (meaning, slay them, fight them, battle with them) until they are defeated (in the battle), then (take captives and) tie them securely, and afterwards either (make a) grace (by freeing them with no conditions) or ransoming (them) when the war ends (prisoner exchange). That (is the command of Allaah). And if Allaah had willed, He (Allaah) could have taken vengeance on them (Himself), but (Allaah decreed) to test some of you by means of others. And those who are killed in the cause of Allaah He (Allaah) shall not waste their deeds. (This verse was revealed at the battle of Uhud. At that time 1,400 years ago there were no guns. In battle people used swords to fight and the most vulnerable part of the body was the neck in the same way that today those that use guns are trained to shoot at the body which is the biggest and therefore the easiest target. 1,400 years ago it was the Army that was well trained in the use of the sword that could better survive hand to hand close combat during a battle in the field).

And those who believed (in Allaah) but did not leave their homes (in Mecca Makkah as they were commanded by Allaah through Prophet Muhammad) you (Prophet Muhammad) have no duty to protect them until they emigrate (from Mecca Makkah to Yathrib) but if they seek help from you in the name of faith then it is your duty to help (them) except (in helping them) against a people between whom you have a treaty. Allaah sees all that you do.
Comment 1. Muslim believers must honour their treaties with the disbelievers.
Allaah tells Prophet Muhammad that Prophet Muhammad cannot help a Muslim who lives in Mecca Makkah if such help is against the treaty between the Muslims in Yathrib and the stone idol worshippers in Mecca Makkah.
Quran 8:73 Koran 8:73 Verse 8:73 Ayah 8:73 Ayat 8:73 Aya 8:73 And those who disbelieve (the stone idol worshippers in Mecca Makkah and others) are protectors to each other. If you (the Muslims) do not (help and protect each other then) there shall be persecution in the land and great misbehavior.
Quran 8:74 Koran 8:74 Verse 8:74 Ayah 8:74 Ayat 8:74 Aya 8:74 Those who believed and left their homes (in Mecca Makkah and went into exile) and struggled for the cause of Allaah, and those who took them in (giving them asylum from the religious persecution in Mecca Makkah) and helped them, they are the true believers in Allaah. For them is pardon (for their sins) and the generous provision (of Paradise in the Hereafter).
