The people of Makkah who lived all their lives with Prophet Muhammad testify he can read and write in Quran 25:5.

In the Quran Allaah shows that the people of Makkah knew that Prophet Muhammad can read and write meaning the idea that Prophet Muhammad cannot read and write is not from Allaah and not from Prophet Muhammad and not from the Quran but came from people who did not understand the meaning of lettered meaning educated in the scripture of Allaah and unlettered meaning not educated in the scripture of Allaah.

1. Prophet Muhammad said that he could write.

“... He (Ibn 'Abbas) said, "When the condition (i.e. health) of Allaah’s messenger deteriorated, he (Prophet Muhammad) said, Bring me a bone of scapula, so that I may write something for you after which you will never go astray.' ... (Hadith of Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4 Book 53 Number 408).”

2. People next to Prophet Muhammad said Prophet Muhammad could write.

".... Come near so that Allaah’s messenger may write for you a writing after which you will not go astray (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 92, Number 468),"

3. Ibn Abbas said Prophet Muhammad could write.

"…. It was a great disaster (a great loss of guidance) that their arguing and noise prevented Allaah’s messenger from writing that writing for them (Sahih al-Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 92, Number 468).”

4. Sahih Bukhari reports that Prophet Muhammad could write.

The Prophet wrote the (marriage contract) with ‘Aisha while she was six years old ....". (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 7, Book 62, Number 88).

5. Prophet Muhammad could read.

“… Allaah’s messenger (Prophet Muhammad) said (to Ali) “Let me see the paper.” When Ali showed him the paper the Prophet erased the expression with his own hand …” (Sahih Bukhari, Volume 4 Book 53 Number 408).

Note 1. To erase something in a document you need to be able to read another persons hand writing so that you can find the words you want to erase so this hadith shows the Prophet could read.

6. The people in Makkah said Prophet Muhammad can write.

Quran 25:5 Koran 25:5 And they (the stone idol worshippers in Makkah) say, “(The Quran is the) stories of the people of the past which he (Prophet Muhammad) has written down and they (another person) are dictating (meaning speaking the words) to him (Prophet Muhammad) in the morning and evening (in secret so that Prophet Muhammad can write down the words of the Quran and learn those words so that in the day Prophet Muhammad can recite the Quran in public to the people of Mecca Makkah).

Note 1. People in Makkah would not say Prophet Muhammad could write if Prophet Muhammad could not write. The reason is that everyone in Makkah knew if Prophet Muhammad could read and write because Prophet Muhammad had lived among them all his life.

If the people in Makkah claimed that Prophet Muhammad could write it was because this was known by all the people in Mecca.

Quran 10:16 Koran 10:16 “... I (Prophet Muhammad) lived among you (the stone idol worshippers of Makkah) all my life before it (the Quran was revealed to me) …”

Note 2. Everyone in Makkah knew Prophet Muhammad could read and write otherwise such a claim would have been rejected by the people in Makkah who would have said “this is not true because we known Prophet Muhammad cannot read or write.”

Quran 10:16 Koran 10:16 “... I (Prophet Muhammad) lived among you (the stone idol worshippers of Makkah) all my life before it (the Quran was revealed to me) …”

Note 3. Everyone in Makkah knew Prophet Muhammad could read and write otherwise the Quran would have said “but Prophet Muhammad cannot read or write”.

Quran 29:48 Koran 29:48 (In Quran 25:5 the stone idol worshippers in Makkah Arabia said Prophet Muhammad is writing the words of the Quran that another person is dictating to Prophet Muhammad to write down. Allaah replies in Quran 25:4 declaring as unjust and false the accusation that the Quran is invented and that other people are helping Prophet Muhammad with it by explaining in Quran 16:103 that the speech of the person a Christian blacksmith named Barbarous whom they suggest is helping Prophet Muhammad by dictating the words of the Quran speaks a foreign language whereas the Quran is in clear Arabic speech. To the statement in Quran 25:5 that Prophet Muhammad can read and write said by the people in Makkah who in Quran 10:16 had lived with Prophet Muhammad all their life Allaah replies not by saying that Prophet Muhammad cannot read and write but by saying) And you (Prophet Muhammad) did not recite any book (to the people) before this (Quran was revealed to you) nor did you write it (any book) with your hand (before this Quran was revealed to you) otherwise the doubters might have had reason to doubt (your truthfulness about the Quran because they would have suspected you were reciting and writing the Quran for them like you had recited and written books for them before you became a prophet if you had been a reciter of books and a writer of books before you became a prophet. The people of Makkah 1400 years ago were known as the Ummi Unlettered people meaning the people who were uneducated in the Scriptures and they wrote contracts, agreements, announcements and poetry on pieces of paper, leaf and bone which they put on the wall of the Kabah however they did not write books. Buyers, sellers and traders in Makkah used the Arabic alphabet to represent numbers to make calculations because numbers as we know them today did not exist 1400 years ago in the Arabic language. Quran 29:48 is not saying Prophet Muhammad could not read and write but only that he did not recite or write books before he was a prophet like other unlettered Ummi people in Makkah who could read and write but also did not write books. The most well known people writing books near Makkah were the Lettered people meaning the people who were educated in the Scriptures and the books they wrote were the Scriptures. In Quran 2:78 an unlettered Ummi is a Jew who is uneducated in the Book of Allaah the Torah Taurat. In Quran 3:20 and Quran 3:75 the lettered people are the people of the Book who are educated in the book of Allaah and everyone who is not educated in the book of Allaah is called the unlettered Ummi. In Quran 7:157 and Quran 7:158 Prophet Muhammad is the unlettered Ummi meaning he was uneducated in the Book of Allaah before it was revealed to him. In Quran 62:2 the unlettered Ummi are the people who are uneducated in the Book of Allaah and from among themselves has come a messenger Prophet Muhammad who is also called the unlettered Ummi meaning he was uneducated in the Book of Allaah before it was revealed to him. In Quran 42:52 Allaah confirms that Prophet Muhammad did not know the book of Allaah meaning he was uneducated in the book of Allaah before it was revealed to him in the same way as the people of Makkah were uneducated in the book of Allaah meaning the prophet and his people were unlettered Ummi meaning uneducated in the Book of Allaah. Quran 29:48 does not say Prophet Muhammad cannot read and write on pieces of paper, leaf and bone but only says that before Muhammad was a prophet he did not recite or write books meaning why would you doubt the Quran is from Allaah when the Quran is a book recited and written by a man who had never before recited and written a book? If he had recited and written a book before the Quran was revealed to him then you might have had a reason to doubt Prophet Muhammad meaning why do you doubt the honesty of Prophet Muhammad when he has given you no reason that you should doubt him?).

Note 1. The Quran says Prophet Muhammad did not recite a book to the people before the Quran was revealed in Quran 29:48.

The Quran does not say Prophet Muhammad could not read before the Quran was revealed.

The Quran does not say Prophet Muhammad could not read after the Quran was revealed.

Note 2. The Quran says Prophet Muhammad did not write a book before the Quran was revealed otherwise the doubters might have had reason to doubt the truthfulness of the Quran in Quran 29:48.

Note 3. Allaah does not say Prophet Muhammad was illiterate in Quran 29:48.

In Quran 25:5 the people in Makkah said the truth “that Prophet Muhammad could read and write” and then they added a falsehood to explain where they believed the Quran came from “they (another person) are dictating (meaning speaking the words) to him (Prophet Muhammad) in the morning and evening (in secret so that Prophet Muhammad can write down the words of the Quran and learn those words so that in the day Prophet Muhammad can recite the Quran in public to the people of Mecca Makkah).

7. The idea that Prophet Muhammad could not read and write came from a misunderstanding of the meaning in the Quran of lettered meaning educated in the Book of Allaah (which some people wrongly though means a person who can read and write) and unlettered meaning not educated in the Book of Allaah (which some people wrongly though means a person who cannot read and write) and the following hadith story from humans about the first revelation to Prophet Muhammad.

Hadith of Sahih Bukhari Volume 1 Book 1 Number 3.

Narrated by 'Aisha (the mother of the faithful believers):

The commencement of the Divine Inspiration to Allaah's Apostle was in the form of good dreams which came true like bright day light, and then the love of seclusion was bestowed upon him.

He used to go in seclusion in the cave of Hira where he used to worship (Allaah alone) continuously for many days before his desire to see his family.

He used to take with him the journey food for the stay and then come back to (his wife) Khadija to take his food like-wise again till suddenly the Truth descended upon him while he was in the cave of Hira.

The angel came to him and asked him to read

Note 1: Angel Gabriel Jibril did not bring a book to read.

Note 2: Read means recite by repeating the words spoken to you by Angel Gabriel Jibril.

The angel came to him and asked him to recite

The Prophet replied, 'I do not know how to read'

Note 1: meaning I do not know how to recite meaning what shall I recite?

The Prophet replied, "What shall I recite?"

The Prophet added, "The angel caught me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it any more.

He then released me and again asked me to read

Note 1: Angel Gabriel Jibril did not bring a book to read.

Note 2: Read means recite by repeating the words spoken to you by Angel Gabriel Jibril.

He then released me and again asked me to recite.

and I replied, 'I do not know how to read'

Note 1: meaning I do not know how to recite meaning what shall I recite?

and I replied, "What shall I recite?"

Thereupon he caught me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it any more.

He then released me and again asked me to read

He then released me and again asked me to recite.

but again I replied, 'I do not know how to read (or what shall I read)?'

Comment: This hadith has included in brackets confirmation that I do not know how to read means what shall I read?

This hadith confirms that the true meaning of I do not know how to recite means what shall I recite?

Angel Gabriel Jibril did not bring a book to read which confirms that Prophet Muhammad is responding with the words what shall I recite?

but again I replied, "What shall I recite?"

Thereupon he caught me for the third time and pressed me, and then released me and said, 'Read

in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists) has created man from a clot. Read!

Read means recite by repeating the words spoken to you by Angel Gabriel Jibril.

in the name of your Lord, who has created (all that exists) has created man from a clot. Recite!

And your Lord is the Most Generous." (96.1, 96.2, 96.3).

Note 1: Sahih Bukhari Volume 1 Book 1 Number 3 shows that the correct meaning of “read” is "recite" by repeating the words spoken to you by Angel Gabriel Jibril in Quran 96.1, 96.2, 96.3.

Quran 2:252 Verse 2:252 These are the revelations of Allaah. We (Allaah through Angel Gabriel Jibril) recite them to you (Prophet Muhammad) with the truth, and indeed you are one of the Messengers (of Allaah).

Quran 75:16 Verse 75:16 (Prophet Muhammad) do not recite to hurry (the memorization of) it (the Quran).

Quran 75:17 Verse 75:17 It is Us (Allaah) who have accumulated it (the Quran, in your memory) and (made possible) its recitation.

Quran 75:18 Verse 75:18 So when We (Allaah) recite it (the Quran, through the Holy Spirit, angel Gabriel Jibril), then follow its recitation (by repeating what you heard).

Then Allaah's Apostle returned with the Inspiration and with his heart beating severely. Then he went to Khadija bint Khuwailid and said, "Cover me! Cover me!"

They covered him till his fear was over and after that he told her everything that had happened and said, "I fear that something may happen to me."

Khadija replied, "Never! By Allaah, Allaah will never disgrace you.

You keep good relations with your Kith and kin, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guests generously and assist the deserving calamity-afflicted ones." Khadija then accompanied him to her cousin Waraqa bin Naufal bin Asad bin 'Abdul 'Uzza, who, during the Pre-Islamic Period became a Christian and used to write the writing with Hebrew letters.

He would write from the Gospel in Hebrew as much as Allaah wished him to write.

He was an old man and had lost his eyesight.

Khadija said to Waraqa, "Listen to the story of your nephew, O my cousin!"

Waraqa asked, "O my nephew! What have you seen?"

Allaah's Apostle described whatever he had seen.

Waraqa said, "This is the same one who keeps the secrets (angel Gabriel) whom Allaah had sent to Moses.

I wish I were young and could live up to the time when your people would turn you out."

Allaah's Apostle asked, "Will they drive me out?"

Waraqa replied in the affirmative and said, "Anyone (man) who came with something similar to what you have brought was treated with hostility; and if I should remain alive till the day when you will be turned out then I would support you strongly."

But after a few days Waraqa died and the Divine Inspiration was also paused for a while.

Narrated Jabir bin 'Abdullah Al-Ansari while talking about the period of pause in revelation reporting the speech of the Prophet

"While I was walking, all of a sudden I heard a voice from the sky.

I looked up and saw the same angel who had visited me at the cave of Hira' sitting on a chair between the sky and the earth.

I got afraid of him and came back home and said, 'Wrap me (in blankets).'

And then Allaah revealed the following Holy Verses (of Quran): 'O you (i.e. Muhammad)! Wrapped up in garments!' Arise and warn (the people against Allaah's Punishment).... up to 'and desert the idols.' (74.1-5)

After this the revelation started coming strongly, frequently and regularly."

(End of the hadith of Sahih Bukhari Volume 1 Book 1 Number 3 narrated by 'Aisha the wife of Prophet Muhammad).

8. Why do some people believe Prophet Muhammad cannot read and write?

Quran 17:88 Koran 17:88 Say (Prophet Muhammad), "If humans and jinn (such as Satan Shaitan) came together to help each other to produce something like the Quran, they could not do it."

Note 1. In the hereafter Satan Shaitan might boast he obeyed Quran 17:88 by whispering hundreds of false hadith stories which teach the opposite to what Allaah and Prophet Muhammad teach in the Quran.

Note 2. In Quran 10:16 the people of Makkah knew Prophet Muhammad all his life and in Quran 25:5 they said someone is dictating the Quran and Prophet Muhammad is writing it down meaning Allaah is telling us that everyone in Makkah knew Prophet Muhammad could read and write.

Allaah never said Prophet Muhammad cannot read and write but tells us he can and everyone in Makkah knew it.

In Quran 29:48 Prophet Muhammad did not recite any book or write any book before the Quran was revealed to him otherwise people might have had a reason to doubt him.

People in Makkah did not recite books or write books but they wrote messages and put it on the wall of the Kabah and they used the letters of the alphabet to represent numbers and make mathematical calculations during commercial trading because they did not have numbers like we have today.

Quran 77:50 Koran 77:50 In what statement (words, news, reports, information, message, hadith), after it (the verses of Allaah in the Quran), shall they (the humans and the jinn) believe?

Note 1. Quran 7:185, Quran 25:29, Quran 25:30, Quran 31:6, Quran 39:23, Quran 45:6 and Quran 77:50 asks when you have the word of Allaah in the Quran what other report would you believe?

Note 2. Allaah says in Quran 7:185, Quran 25:30, Quran 39:23, Quran 45:6 and Quran 77:50 if anything contradicts the Quran then reject it and follow what Allaah is teaching in the Quran.

Note 3. Do not twist inside your mind the meaning of the words of Allaah in the Quran to agree with hadith stories.

If hadith stories agree with the Quran then accept it and learn from it.

If hadith stories do not agree with the Quran then reject it and also learn from it.

On the Day of Judgement Allaah judges by the words in the protected Quran.

On the Day of Judgement Allaah does not judge by the words in unprotected human hadith stories.

The Quran is the protected word of Allaah including the words and actions of Prophet Muhammad which are described and protected by Allaah.

Quran 25:30 Koran 25:30 And (on the Day of Resurrection and Judgement) the messenger (Prophet Muhammad) said, “My Lord (Allaah) my people have abandoned (deserted) this Quran (to follow false messages, false words, false news, false reports, false information, false statements, false hadith).”

Note 1. On the Day of Resurrection and Judgement Prophet Muhammad will say “My Lord my people have abandoned this Quran (to follow false messages, false words, false news, false reports, false information, false statements, false hadith).”

9. Misguidance.

When people are taught how to twist the words of Allaah to agree with hadith stories which teach the opposite to what Allaah teaches in the Quran instead of teaching people to ask the question "does this hadith story agree with the teachings of Allaah in the Quran" the result can be people who follow the mistakes of other people instead of people who are led by the teachings of Allaah in the Quran.

In Christianity some people follow the story that Jesus is Allaah which is not in the four Gospels however because they believe something from outside the Gospel they twist every verse in the Gospel to show that Jesus is Allaah even when Jesus prays to Allaah in all the four Gospel Injil and even when Allaah says in the Gospel that both Jesus and the angels do not know "the hour" because only Allaah knows

In Islam some people follow hadith stories which teach the opposite to what Allaah and Prophet Muhammad teach in the Quran and like some Christians they also twist every verse of Allaah in the Quran to agree with some thing that came from outside the Quran.

In this way some Christians and some Muslims have beliefs which contradict the teachings of Allaah in the Gospel and in the Quran.

10. The danger of believing false stories.

People who believe false stories invented by other humans after the death of a prophet can be made to believe other false stories invented by humans as seen in some Christian cults and some Muslim cults who followed stories supporting their killing of people and their killing of themselves.

11. Education.

Teaching people to ask "is this story contradicting the teachings in the books of Allaah" will help protect people from other people who are following false stories instead of following the stories in the books of Allaah Inshallah Allaah willing.
