Heaton Stannington 0-3 Washington

Pre Season Friendly

Although it stayed dry, this match was a washout for the Stan against Division 1 opposition as they fell apart in the 2nd half. A few 1st team players were missing including Jones who, with a stiff leg, was rested for the FA cup on Saturday.

Both teams tried to attack and there were lots of offside decisions in the 1st half especially against the visitors. Washington shot just wide after 10 minutes and a Portella long shot after 15 hit the top of the goal net. In 26 minutes, a Yates shot deflected off the keeper. Washington then had 3 attacks with much of the rest of the action being in the middle of the park. In 42 minutes, the Washington keeper dropped the ball under pressure from a corner but then cleared to one of his players who broke free but shot wide. Maughan then had to make a save on half time.

In 50 minutes, the Stan shot wide followed by Washington shooting wide and maughan having to punch over his bar under pressure before saving a long shot. Washington kept pressing and an attack down the right in 60 minutes saw the ball blasted into the net from the edge of the box. Stoddart shot over in 66 minutes but the next 10 minutes saw 4 efforts for the visitors including Maughan having to parry 1 shot and catch another.

The Stan then had a sustained attack but it was Washington who scored again in the crowded box in 81 minutes with a tap in. 2 minutes later and it was 0-3 when a ball down the left was crossed for a visiting forward to tap in from the right. Shaftoe then shot over but it was Washington who looked most likely to score again as the match ended with them heading wide and Maughan catching another effort.
