All Time League Cup (Northern League) Record
The recent 5-1 win at Ryton was the Stan’s first win in the league cup since returning to the Northern League in 2013. All five defeats had been against division one opposition. Although the complete record is not yet available, the Stan had more success in the league cup first time round. In their last season in the Northern league before leaving in 1952, the Stan got to the semi-final but were beaten by Tow Law. The Stan’s keeper Alan Wilmot, who still lives round the corner from Grounsell Park, made a brilliant display and kept the score down to 1-0. The season before they had been beaten 9-1 by Bishop Auckland. Their first ever league cup tie was also against Bishop, who were league champions and holders of the FA Amateur Cup at the time, on 16 December 1939. The match was switched to St James’ Park and was watched by 1283 spectators. The Stan took the lead and then came back to draw 2-2
