Willington 0-3 Heaton Stannington
Northern League Division 2
The Stan were in league action in County Durham which saw them return to winning ways and move back up the table to tenth place. There were two changes from the team a week ago.
From kick off, and shooting up hill, the Stan were straight on the attack when Rowntree powered through the defence but was then blocked on a pitch which was in far better condition than when they played at Hall Lane last season. Willington had a couple of attacks but it was then mainly the Stan who were trying to go forward until the home side had another attack in the 9th minute.
It was then back to pressure mainly from the Stan including a Burns shot caught by the keeper in the 12th minute. In the 16th minute, Grieveson broke through the home defence but could not get to a ball from Bailey. A minute later and Grieveson just failed to make contact with a header from Telford in the home box.
After a solitary home attack was cleared in the 18th minute, the Stan finally took the lead in the 21st minute through a great individual goal that Archie Gemmill would be proud of. Lewis Burns ran down the left wing with a defender on him, beat another home player and moved into the edge of the penalty box where he twisted round another defender before shooting past the keeper to put the ball away in the left hand corner of the net. The Stan then had two more attacks before Willington had an attack cleared in the 28thminute. It was then all Stan for the rest of the first half.
In the 34th minute, Grieveson was brought down when running into the box from the right. Adam Rowntree took the penalty and sent the keeper the wrong way to make it 2-0. In the 38th minute, a rare home attack saw the ball sent back up the pitch with the resulting shot from Burns blocked by the keeper. Rowntree managed to get the ball from the rebound but could not get in a position to shoot.
There was another good opportunity four minutes later when Telford got on the end of a Burns free kick but headed at the keeper who put the ball out for a corner. A minute later Grieveson shot over the bar and this was followed by Bailey heading over it in front of the keeper.
Just after kick off for the second half the Stan shot just wide. Willington then had some pressure with Smith saving in the 48th minute. In the 53rd minute the ball was sent into a crowded Stan box with a home player then shooting wide when he should have scored. Two minutes later and a home attack down the right saw them beat the defence but Smith got his hand to the shot. After the ball was headed out for a second corner, Smith caught the ball.
In the 58th minute, Telford broke through the defence on the right and was in a good position but was wrongly flagged for offside. Three minutes later and a home player went down in the box but the officials this time got the decision right and did not award a penalty. The home side shot over from a corner in the 67th minute with the Stan heading over a minute later.
The Stan continued to pressurise the home team and in 75 minutes a Telford attack into the box was blocked followed by Bailey shooting over the bar. The Stan kept attacking and their efforts paid off in the 81st minute when, from a throw in, Hayton took the ball into the box and made a short pass to Lewis Burns who then shot home to make it 3-0. Substitute Jones sliced an effort in the 86th minute before shooting over the bar from the resulting corner.
The game ended after another substitute, Hayton, saw his shot from the right beat the keeper but then go just wide of the left post. It was a comfortable win which left the Stan management team happy.
