Heaton Stannington 3-2 Tow Law Town

Northern League Division 2

The Stan returned to league action today and made it 11 games on the bounce unbeaten in league and cup, with a hard fought 3-2 victory against a unlucky Tow Law. Two goals from Connor Campbell and one from Dan Robinson gave us the three points, while Dan Kirkup and Trae Rowlandson replied for the visitors who will feel a tad unlucky that they didn't get at least a point from the game.

Manager Derek Thompson made five changes to the the team that started midweek against Ashington. Fulcher, Holland, Campbell, Sayer & Robinson replaced Davidson, Burns, Robertson, Kerridge & Fox.

Stan got the game underway attacking the carpark end on a mild but dull day at Grounsell Park. And the Stan had the first shot on target when Danny Sayer shot straight at Curran in the Tow Law goal. The Stan were soon on the back foot when an in swinging corner was headed off the line by Sayer. The Stan immediately attacked and a lovely header into the box and Connor Campbell made no mistake giving the Stan the lead on 9 mins.

The goal didn't deter Tow Law who were soon in search of a equaliser and Callum Smith brought a fine save from Stan gloveman Dan Regan after 18 mins. Tow Law thought they had the equaliser on 24 mins but Milburns shot rattled off the post. Tow Law were dominating the game, with the Stan struggling to find any rhythm.

With 8 mins till the break a patient build up by the Stan and Sayer finds Campbell who fires a rocket from 20 yards giving Curran no chance in the Tow Law goal. Totally against the run of play saw the Stan go into the break 2-0 up.

Tow Law started the second half looking to get back into the game, which they nearly did when a good corner was headed just over the bar. And on 53 mins, Milburn just curled a shot wide for the visitors after some excellent work from Lewis Martin.

Football can be cruel and Stan's first real attack of the second half resulted in us going 3-0 up. Dan Robinson broke into the box on 55 mins and somehow avoided a couple of tackles to fire his shot through the hands of Curran, who will be disappointed he didn't do better.

Tow Law decided to go for it, by putting big Dan Kirkup up front and he duly obliged by pulling a goal back with a header from a corner on 64mins. With Tow Law attacking the Stan were always looking dangerous on the counter & Robinson nearly made it four on 75 mins but Curran this time saved well.

With 10 mins to go Campbell took a ball brilliantly on his chest, lobbed Tow Law Keeper Curran but the cross bar saved the day for the visitors. Late into injury time, Tow Law pulled another goal back when a looping header from Rowlandson caught Regan flat footed, but it was all too late as the ref blew for full time.

Tow Law certainly played better than their league position suggests, but some quality finishing by the Stan front men ultimately proved decisive.
