Heaton Stannington 5-0 Northallerton

Northern League Division 2

The Stan hoped to keep the momentum going after 5 straight wins as they hosted the Yorkshire men on a sunny afternoon. There were 2 changes from last Saturday and a competitive debut from the bench for Jack Cooper who has signed from North Shields. Re-signed Dan Robinson was unavailable as he was on his honeymoon.

The Stan started on the attack and had a free kick into the box after 2minutes. A minute later the Stan countered through Burns but the attack was eventually cleared. Burns forced a corner after 6 minutes which was cleared but with Robertson calling for a free kick. Brook then had to catch before a Stan attack was headed clear. A Northallerton free kick was then put wide but soon after they had a speculative long shot which Regan put out for a corner. He then punched the ball from the corner away.

Both teams were trying to attack, although the Stan were having slightly more opportunities, and in 12 minutes a Stan attack was cleared twice before Fulcher blocked a Northallerton attack. Robertson then passed to Campbell, who beat the off-side trap but the visiting keeper McDonald blocked at close range for a corner and he then caught the resulting ball from it.

In 17 minutes Campbell supplied Burns but he shot well over. It was all mainly Stan now and the pressure paid off in 24 minutes when Campbell broke down the right and crossed to Robertson. As his opportunity to shoot was blocked he passed to the advancing Sayer on the left who confidently shot past McDonald at his near post.

Both teams continued to attack and in 29 minutes Regan got down to block a Northallerton effort with the rebound shot deflected out for a corner. A minute later and the visitors hit the side netting. The match was now in a period of Northallerton pressure and Middleton had to clear before a free kick was put over the Stan bar. Northallerton kept attacking and shot wide in 37 minutes.

Against this recent run of play though the Stan made it 2-0 in 38 minutes when Campbell passed to the advancing Burns. The ball hit off McDonald first but Burns strolled past him and scored. The Stan kept attacking now and Middleton shot just wide. The ball did go in the North net again but was offside. In 43 minutes Regan blocked with his feet before McDonald had to catch and the half finished with Fulcher blocking then Northallerton shooting over.

Both teams started the 2nd half on the attack. Northallerton soon had a free kick which Regan stopped with an excellent catch. The match was sealed though in 49 minutes when a Stan attack was blocked but Campbell eventually got a shot in from 10 yards. It was his 7th goal in his 1st 6 games for the club.

The Stan kept attacking, especially through Burns who was having a great game. In 57 minutes it was 4-0 when Imray’s shot was blocked but Robertson tapped in the rebound. The visitors then had 2 attacks before McDonald blocked a Stan attack.

In 73 minutes it was 5-0 when a long pass from Burns to sub Fox in the box saw him beat the keeper and tap the ball into the net. The Stan continued their joined-up attacks but Northallerton did not give up either. In the 81st minute they had a shot from 8 yards which Regan blocked and there were further clearances at both ends but no more goals.

The Stan had played well, including lots of good flowing football rather than the hoof it up the pitch approach to a sole striker taken earlier in the season, and have now won 6 competitive games in a row.
