Heaton Stannington 4-1 Bedlington Terriers

Northern League Division 2

After a 5-game gap and over a 2months wait, due to the weather, the Stan finally got back to wining. ways. There were no changes from the last match 2 weeks ago at Jarrow.

The Stan started on the attack resulting in Wright shooting just wide. He was desperate to score, sometimes at the expense of missing out on passing opportunities, but all was to end well as a result of his determination. After 4 minutes he flicked the ball and the Bedlington keeper and a defender ran into each other but somehow were given a foul. The Stan kept attacking and Bedlington did not have there 1st attack until 7 minutes when Smith got out to clear and 2 minutes later he made a save. The Stan kept attacking and the Terriers were finding it difficult to deal with Wright’s runs.

The Terriers had a couple of counter attacks with one resulting in the ball going into the net but a foul for offside and hand ball had already been given. Almost immediately after, in 18 minutes, the Terriers won the ball and Jack Foale ran from the centre circle, outpaced the defence and rounded Smith to calmly make it 0-1.

Holland then attacked and the resulting corner saw Wear blast the ball against a defender. Burns got the ball back in but it was cleared. Foale won the ball and attacked again but was blocked. Hoggins and Parker efforts were blocked before Smith had to catch in 27 minutes. Wright hit the bar but was offside.

In 30 minutes, the Stan were level when Hoggins weaved into the box but as he was blocked he passed to Wright, who was next to him, who blasted the ball past a defender and the keeper. Bedlington then had a corner eventually shooting wide. In 35 minutes, calamity goalkeeping made it 2-1 to the Stan. Holland, from the edge of the box, blasted the ball through players. The keeper got down but couldn’t hold onto the ball and it slipped through his hands and over the line.

Wright twisted past a defender in 40 minutes but shot just wide. The Stan kept attacking into injury time, when Sayer was actually injured by a bad tackle, with the half finishing as it had begun with a Wright shot but this time it was straight at the keeper.

After an initial Wright effort, the 2nd half started more quietly until in 54 minutes Smith was put under pressure managing to block the ball and luckily the Terrier forward slipped when he had a chance to score. Bedlington attacked again and hit the crossbar and after a corner Smith made a good catch.

The period of Bedlington pressure continued until the 60th minute when Parker took a free kick from just outside the box which went around the wall. The keeper got to the ball but Hoggins was close by to tap in the rebound. A minute later Hoggins nearly got a 2nd when his shot was put just wide by the keeper.

In 64 minutes Smith made a great save on the line under pressure after initially blocking. There were then attacks and shots at both ends. In 71 minutes Imray’s shot was blocked then Wright was 1 on 1 with the keeper who blocked his shot when he should have scored. The Stan had 2 more attacks to the Terriers 1 before, in 77 minutes, Holland passed to Wright who broke free through 2 defenders and tapped the ball confidently past the keeper for 4-1.

In 80 minutes sub Salim had a great run, passed a defender but his shot was blocked by the keeper. Wright then won the ball on half way and turned and shot wide. The Stan were in control now and Salim, under pressure, beat the keeper but hit the post with his great effort. With 5 minutes to go, Wright tried to take on the whole defence but lost the bal. The ball came back in and Wright was brought down in the box. After an injury to a Terrier player, in the 87th minute Wright’s resulting penalty was saved by the keeper and he was denied his hat-trick.

It was a great win though and an entertaining match. Let us hope it is more of the same on Wednesday against Darlington RA.
