Thornaby 1-2 Heaton Stannington

Northern League Division 2

The Stan got back to winning ways on Teesside. There were four changes from the Hebburn starting line up last Saturday. This included a first start for Jordan Ray and a return from injury as a substitute for Gary Yates. As the usual Stan reporter was unavailable, thanks are given to Thornaby committee member Matthew Carroll for this match report.

Thornaby started the match unbeaten at home this season while the Stan hoped to improve on their record of one point from the last three games. It was the visitors who had the first chance after three minutes when Dodsworth's free kick from the right saw Creswick head over the bar. Thornaby had their first chance just moments later when a cross from Morrison saw Barton head over the bar from inside the box.

The home side then had a spell of pressure when firstly Ruddy great run on the left hand side saw him beat two players and shoot from the edge off the box with Backhouse tipping the ball away for a corner. Minutes later Ruddy was involved in the next Thornaby attack when his cross from the left fell to McQueeney who headed wide McQueeney also had the following effort when Clarke’s pass sent him away but he hit straight at Backhouse.

The Stan took the lead against the run of play when a cross from the right was spilt by home keeper Duff. Dodsworth picked up the ball and squared it across goal for Waugh to slide the ball home at the back post with forty three minutes gone. Thornaby had the final chance off the half when Edwards played in Matthew McQueeney who fired over the bar but it remained 0-1 at half time.

Thornaby had the first chance off the second half when Barton cut in from the right hand side and his effort went just over the bar. The Stan had the first chance to increase there lead when the dangerous Dodsworth saw his rasping effort from thirty yards fly just over the bar. Waugh then tried his luck from forty yards with Duff out of his goal but his effort went just wide.

The home side then had a chance to equalise when substitute Edwards played in Clarke who saw his low effort well saved by Backhouse at his near post. This was followed by Horsman's long ball forward which fell to Alderson who hit his effort straight at the legs off Backhouse.

Thornaby levelled matters when Alderson played in Edwards whose left footed chip over Backhouse went into the net with eighty minutes played. Things went wrong after that for the home side when Morrison went down in a heap in the box and had to go off as Thornaby had already made three substitutions.

Three minutes into injury time the Stan took the lead when Thornaby gave the ball away in their own half and the ball was played into Burns who was through on goal and was taken out by Alderson. Referee David Pill had no choice but to award a penalty and send off Alderson for denying an obvious goal scoring opportunity. Brian Dodsworth, who had already put in a great performance, stepped up to convert with a powerful shot.

The match finished soon after with an important 2-1 away win for Heaton Stannington.
