Jarrow 1-1 Heaton Stannington
Northern league Division 2
The Stan finally got to play their 1st match in 13 days as a crowd of 103 hardy souls braved a cold night on South Tyneside on the Stan’s 1st ever visit to Jarrow’s Perth Green ground.
The Stan made 6 changes to their previous game including a 1st start for Lewis Burns on his return to the club and a 1st start in a while for Captain Joe Wear.
Jarrow got proceedings underway, but it was the Stan that mounted the 1st attack only to run out of pitch for a goal kick to Jarrow. At the 5-minute mark, Jarrow’s Goss sent a low shot wide of the upright followed by an effort that cleared Smith’s crossbar. At the other end Wright sent a low hard drive that the Jarrow keeper saved.
The Stan looked the more likely to score and did so on 15 minutes when Richie Hoggins latched on to a through ball from Sayer to smash the ball past Jak Wells in the Jarrow goal. The Stan kept pressing and after 20 minutes a cross by Holland was collected by Wells. After a poor free kick by Wright, just outside the Jarrow box, a shot by Goss was saved low down by Smith. The Stan’s Lewis Burns was spoken to by the ref for a tackle and 5 minutes later he got a yellow card for another wild tackle.
It was a well fought match and a good run by Wright ended in a corner followed at the other end with a Jarrow header going wide.
Jarrow took control in the second half and were unlucky when Smith found himself in no-man’s land and the ball came to the feet of a Jarrow player who lobbed it goal-wards only to see his effort come off the bar.
On 61 minutes Laidler came on for Burns and 8 minutes later Hoggins was replaced by Wotherspoon. An equaliser came for Jarrow when a low drive was deflected into the Stan net, the goal being accredited to Michael Watson.
Sayer needed treatment before continuing after a bad tackle by Jarrow’s Little, who was rightfully booked.
On 85 minutes, Wright made his usual run along the 18-yard line trying to get a shot in but was forced wide and could not find the target with his eventual shot. It was not Wright’s night as he had previously sent 3 or 4 free kicks high and wide. Laidler had a glorious chance near the end to take all 3 points as he tried to round the keeper but Wells dropped on the ball to leave the score at the end 1-1.
It was a good battle with a very hospitable club. At least the Stan saw their losing run come to an end.
