Heaton Stannington 2-1 West Allotment Celtic

Northumberland Senior Cup 1st Round

The Stan were in cup action for the second time in five days, this time at home against their local rivals. It was pouring down for most of this East Newcastle old firm match but there was still a healthy crowd of over 160. There were three changes for the Stan from Saturday’s Vase game.

It was an action packed first 31 seconds as The Stan kicked off, lost the ball, regained it and Dodsworth then ran down the left and into the middle where he passed to Wright just inside the box who side footed the ball to make it 1-0 to the Stan. In the 7th minute, a Stan shot from 30 yards went wide. Celtic then had a couple of easily cleared shots.

In 17 minutes, a Stan counter attack on the left saw a cross to Telford on the right who shot just wide. There was then a period of sustained Stan attack which ended with Watson shooting just wide in the 26th minute. A Celtic counter attack eventually saw Martin saving. In 35 minutes, the visitors got forward and a speculative long shot by Paul Kane went in to make it 1-1.

There was an ambitious effort two minutes later by Wright when he shot from a tight angle on the left but the ball soared over the bar. In the 41st minute, a Stan corner resulted in the Celtic keeper dropping the ball but it was then cleared. Stoddart then shot straight at the keeper and, with two minutes to half time, Celtic shot just wide.

Six minutes into the second half and Telford cleared with a header and from the resulting corner Celtic shot wide. Another Celtic attack was stopped when Martin was fouled. In 57 minutes, a Watson run down the right was blocked. Two minutes later a corner from the left saw the ball go over the crowded box to Wright on the right edge of it who blasted into the side netting when it looked like the ball had gone in. Another Wright shot was then caught by the keeper.

In 66 minutes a Celtic free kick was headed wide. More Celtic pressure led to Martin saving a shot then parrying the ball away from the resulting corner. It was back to the wall for the Stan as Celtic attacked again in the sideways rain.

In 71 minutes, the Stan started to get back into the match with a Wright shot, from a Stoddart pass, going wide. 3 minutes later and there was a good run by Dodsworth, who had a great second half, but he was eventually forced to shoot just wide. A Wright corner was then headed just over.

In 79 minutes there was a great run by Burns who slipped and recovered and then passed to Rowntree who also slipped on the wet pitch. Two minutes later and Rowntree passed to Wright in the middle who put the defender the wrong way but then he shot just wide. Wright then passed to Rowntree who beat the off side trap but was blocked by the approaching keeper.

The Stan were on top but could not get the goal that what win the match and allow the wet and cold fans to get out of the rain. In 83 minutes, Dodsworth ran the ball into the visiting keeper who was injured in the process and had to be replaced after about 8 minutes of stoppage.

The game restarted in injury time and soon after, just as extra time and penalties and more rain were looming, Dodsworth fed the ball to Wright who confidently slid the ball past the keeper to make it 2-1. Dodsworth also then curled a shot just over the bar before the final whistle went and guaranteed the Stan a quarter final place.
