Brandon United 1-4 Heaton Stannington

Northern league Division 2

After a battling comeback win v Synners in midweek Decka made five changes for the visit to Welfare Park with Ray, Mason, Imray, Paterson and Sayer returning in place of Blackbourne, Bailey, Kerridge, Allan and Hoggins. Brandon, who sat second bottom of the table with one win from their first seven games, fielded a youthful looking line up.

The Stan kicked off in breezy conditions and for the second game in a row they were in front within 70 seconds, the goal came when Wright chased a lost cause down the left, disposessed Joyeux and crossed into the middle where Charmey was racing into the box to side foot past Robinson from 12 yards.

The next 15 minutes were fairly even with neither team getting to grips with the wind but Wright was proving to be a constant threat and another great run and cross was half cleared to Paterson who rattled the post from 20 yards. Two minutes later Wright got into the left side of the box but Robinson did well to block his shot at the near post and from the resulting corner Middleton couldn't get enough on his header to worry the keeper.

The second goal wasn't long in coming however and Wright was involved again when his nearpost corner was turned in by Charmey for his second goal of the game on 23 minutes.

The host's almost got a goal back immediately but Stoddart made a great tackle inside the 6 yard box as the forward was about to shoot, the action soon returned to the other end with Sayer having a cross hacked clear, Wright shooting wide and then Sayer getting on the end of a deep cross but volleying wide from close range.

The onslaught was relentless with Wright forcing Robinson into another save before Charmey broke into the box, rounded the keeper but shot wide of the open goal. Wright was then denied by the keeper after a good combination between Hall and Charmey and the Stan went in at the break good value for their two goal lead.

HT: Brandon 0 - 2 Stan

The second half began as the first had ended with Robinson saving from Wright, Paterson getting into the box but seeing his cross blocked and Sayer doing well to win a corner which was cleared, from the clearance Brandon broke down the left and Martin pulled a goal back with a fine finish high past Ball. It meant both team's had scored with their first shot at goal although Brandon's came 48 minutes after the Stan's.

Lifted by the goal, and the fact they were still in a game that should have been beyond them, Brandon had a decent ten minutes when they pressed but didn't really create anything. Haley was booked for terrible foul on Paterson, as was Paterson for his reaction, and Wright's free kick was headed wide by Middleton at the back post.

The Brandon high line was being breeched everytime the Stan went forward and Wright should have done better than lobbing across the face of goal when he was sent clear but a minute later Sayer went through on his own and placed a neat finish wide of Robinson and into the far corner with the outside of his left foot to restore the two goal advantage.

It was Sayer again soon after, this time breaking down the left before a good tackle stopped him as he entered the box. Brandon's offside trap, stand on halfway, put your hand up and shout at the Lina when a Stan player ran past you, failed again and Paterson was fouled after breaking clear. Wright curled the free kick into the box and Haley turned the ball into his own net for the Stan's fourth goal on 76 minutes.

It was now just a case of how many with Wright and Paterson being denied before Allan, Boyd and Hoggins came on for Paterson, Imray and Wright. Charmey then dribbled past three men inside the Brandon box but shot wide with the goal gaping and the last action of the game saw Hoggins get free inside the box but shoot straight at Robinson and Sayer volleyed the rebound over the bar from close range.

FT: Brandon 1 - 4 Stan

A comprehensive win for the Stan to make it back to back victories for the first time this season with the only disappointment being that they didn't beat their record Northern League tally of 8 goals against a Brandon back four that had gave up the ghost long before the final whistle went. Charmey scored twice but should have had four, the impressive Sayer should have had a hattrick and Jon Jon will never have a better game without scoring.

The win moves us up to 10th place in the table with a free week before we look to continue the unbeaten run at home to Washington on Sat 21st.
