Heaton Stannington 3-2 West Allotment Celtic

Pre Season Friendly

It was a beautiful evening at Grounsell Park and a great setting for this local derby. The management team used the opportunity to test some of the players who had not had a chance to start the earlier friendlies including goalkeeper Daniel Rule. It was a competitive match from the start with chances at either end throughout the ninety minutes. There was no magic Mike, who has now lived up to his name and disappeared for a few weeks, and Jonathan Wright had to be happy (or not) with a place on the bench.

The first half witnessed a few Stan defensive errors and the first one in the sixth minute should have resulted in Celtic scoring. They did so two minutes later when poor defending allowed the only green and white player in the six yard box to shoot and score. In the thirteenth minute, defensive frailties again some how allowed a free kick to miss everyone and make it 2-0 to West Allotment. Two minutes later though a Kevin Carr shot made it 2-1. Celtic were still just edging it until the thirty second minute when there was a great individual goal from Ben Telford. He ran with the ball on the right from half way and scored to make it 2-2. It then remained end to end action until half time.

The second half was similar to the first with chances for both teams. The Stan replaced five players at the same time and this seemed to have an impact. In the sixty second minute Jonathan Wright won a corner from which Gary Dixon scored. Both teams continued to have chances although the Stan had slightly more and held out to win 3-2 and achieve another victory against first division opposition.
