Heaton Stannington vs Jarrow

Northern League Division 2

A Kris Allen goal 3 minutes from time gave the visitors Jarrow the points at a windy Grounsell Park in front of a splendid crowd of 220 this afternoon.

The result sees The Stan slip to 15th in the Ebac Northern League with only the one win in five.

Not surprisingly manager Derek Thompson opted for the same team that beat Chester le Street 3-1 in midweek.

Jarrow got us underway attacking the Church End, immediately Stan’s Danny sayer steals the ball and tries a cheeky long ranges shot which just clears the bar. Joe Kerridge tees up Jon Jon but Jarrow gloveman Wells turned his shot round the post with the resulting corner giving no further trouble. Jarrow weathered the early onslaught and Stan keeper Ball was sharp in the action with a fumble but made a great recovery to deny Jarrow an early goal. A good run from Hall and ball to Bailey who crossed for Paterson who volleyed just over, completed a lively opening 15 mins.

The ever dangerous Jon Wright had shot come cross hacked clear before Wells fumbles a high ball in with Sayer pressurising. Jarrow were beginning to find their feet and a nice build up on the half hour mark sees the Jarrow centre forward in but he makes a bit of a mess with his effort and Ball gathers. The best chance of the half fell to the Stan, Jon Wrights shot was blocked and fell to Sayer who slots it past Wells but great defending by Jarrow and the ball is cleared off the line. Not to be out done Ball is caught miles out of his area Jarrow’s Evan fails to hit an empty net on 37 mins. A smart save form Wells from a Jon Wright stinger on the stroke of HT made sure the score was goalless at the break.

Half time Stan 0 Jarrow 0

Stan made an early substitution when Bennett replaced Middleton who was unable to continue. On 49mins a nice free kick just outside the box by Stan skipper Charmey was fumbled by Wells but cleared before a Stan player could pounce. Both keepers were increasingly getting called into action, this time Ball made a superb point blank save on the hour.

Stan made their second substitution on 62 when Mighty Atom Holland replaced the clearly tired Kerridge. The game was opening up now with both teams having plenty of chances. Ball, who was having a fine game made a great save on 77mins launching himself at a good Jarrow shot. Jon Wright had a great chance on 81 when he manages to get past Mellish with the advancing Wells to beat but he can only toe poke his shot into the side netting. It was the kind of chance that teams regret and so it proved the case when Jarrow hit the Stan with a killer blow when, on 87mins Kris Allen played a smashing one two and neatly slotted the ball past Ball in the Stan goal. The Stan had very little time to respond and the ref blew for full time.

So it was a case of back to the drawing board. Next up is a visit to the wonderful Millfield and Crook Town this coming Wednesday.
