Heaton Stannington 4-1 Bedlington Terriers

Northern League Division 2

The Stan made it three wins in a row on a thrilling afternoon for the bumper crowd of 185. It was not as easy as it looked though as can be seen by the fact that the Stan man of the match was keeper Dan Regan who was the only change from last Saturday with him returning in place of Joe Brook.

The Stan had the 1st 2 chances when after 3 minutes Burns broke and curled the ball past the far box then in 7 minutes Fox volleyed over. Miller made 2 clearances before Wilson in the Terrier’s goal had to catch. In 16 minutes, a Regan long ball saw Campbell nearly get a shot in but under pressure from Wilson it went out for a goal kick.

The 1st 19 minutes were relatively even though both teams were trying to attack. After this though came a period in the match when the Stan only remained in it thanks to the superb goalkeeping of Regan. It started when a Bedlington free kick hit the wall and a rocket rebound shot saw Regan parry it away and the 2nd rebound shot went in the net but was off side.

Then a Terrier blasting shot was blocked by Regan. 2 minutes later and another Terrier shot saw Regan make a great save in the corner of his goal. In 27 minutes, Campbell chipped the ball to Fox in front of an open goal which saw him miss-hit when it looked easier to score.

In 30 minutes, Deagle sent a free kick just wide but then had to limp off being replaced by Kerridge. A minute later and the Stan were ahead when Lewis Burns broke down the right and shot across goal with the ball going into the net off the far post. Bedlington then also shot across goal but their effort went wide.

In 37 minutes, Fulcher sent the ball up to Fox who crossed to Campbell whose header hit the bar and was just put over by the keeper. Bedlington then shot wide under pressure before Imray had a shot deflected for a corner.

Bedlington attacked before Imray, in 44 minutes, sent a long ball to Burns who under pressure slotted the ball past the keeper for 2-0. A minute later and the Stan were 3-0 up when Kerridge sent a long ball to Campbell who put it past the keeper. Just before the half time whistle, Burns sent a long shot over.

The Stan Army had to pinch themselves, especially after depending on the heroics of Regan early on and based on the last home performance against Ryton. Much of the 2nd half though saw the Terriers repeat the early pressure that they had put on the Stan.

They headed wide in 48 minutes and 2 minutes later Miller made a good clearance from a corner. They were blocked again before the 1st Stan attack of the half in 53 minutes. Regan then managed to get to a speculative long shot from the Terriers and had to catch from the resulting corner. Bedlington were then blocked before heading wide.

In 59 minutes, a good ball from Kerridge saw him shoot just wide. It was then back to Regan who came out to block and was booked even though he got the ball. He then had to punch clear and did so again in 64 minutes before making a great save from close range.

In 66 minutes, Bedlington attacked again and made it 3-1 when Williamson passed to Jones who tapped the ball in. It had mainly been the Terriers this half but in 69 minutes a Kerridge free kick was saved by Wilson when it appeared to be going into the top right-hand corner. Bennett then cleared off the line for the Stan and soon after Regan had to save again.

There was then a quieter almost 10 minutes until in 79 minutes when the Terriers put the ball over the bar. 2 minutes later, Campbell broke free and crossed to Kerridge whose shot was blocked by the keeper. In 83 minutes, Campbell was brought down just outside the box with only the keeper to beat but only a corner was given. From it there were 2 handball claims which the referee ignored.

A Terrier header from another corner went straight to Regan. A Stan corner was cleared and soon after a great run by Hall saw him shoot just wide. Robertson then twisted and turned into the box and passed to Kerridge but he couldn’t get to it.

In 89 minutes, Campbell passed to Burns who broke free from McGuiness and confidently blasted the ball into the net for his hat-trick. In 91 minutes, Regan had to catch when a Bedlington player broke free but miss-kicked. The Stan attacked again before the match finished with the Terriers shooting high and over.

It was a great win for the Stan, especially thanks to Regan and Burns, as they look forward to League Cup action on Wednesday night at Ryton.
