Heaton Stannington 3-1 Washington

Ernest Armstrong Cup - Round 2

Both teams entered the cup for Division 2 teams at the second round stage, after receiving byes, and the Stan were out for revenge for both the 4-1 league defeat in August, although with Dan Robinson now playing for the Stan, and our semi-final defeat in this competion in the 13-14 season. The Stan made 3 changes from Saturday as they aimed to extend their competitive unbeaten run to 12 games.

The heavy rain stopped in time for kick off with the Stan starting on the attack. After 2 minutes a shot by Robinson was deflected for a corner which was cleared. In 4 minutes Middleton makes a great cross but Robinson couldnt get to it in the box. Washington then had a free kick from just outside the box headed clear by Miller. In 7 minutes the Stan also had a free kick which Charmey sent just over the bar. Washington’s No8 then broke free and under pressure shot just wide.

Both teams attacked when they could and in 14 minutes there was a bad tackle on Sayer in the middle of the park. In 18 minutes a high ball to Campbell saw him beat the defence but his lob over the keeper hit the bar when he should have scored.

In 24 minutes the visitor’s No5 was tripped by Miller in the box and a penalty was awarded. Regan went the wrong way and Goss scored to make it 0-1. Two minutes later and Robinson was brought down in the box but nothing was given this time. In 30 minutes the Stan shot wide then hit the crossbar. 2 minutes later and Washington shot just wide.

Burns made a great run before, in 36 minutes, Charmey also made a great run but his shot hit the post and was put out for a corner. From the corner the Stan were back level as Dan Robinson headed into the net. In 37 minutes a shot by Campbell saw Armin in the Washington goal just get his hand to the ball and put it over the bar. From the corner, under pressure, Campbell headed just wide.

The Stan attacked again and Charmey twisted round a defender but his shot was put out by Armin. The corner, in 39 minutes, saw a scramble for the ball in the box. It went out to Miller in the edge of the box and his shot was deflected into the net by a Washington player with Armin unable to get a view of it and the Stan had come from behind to take the lead.

The half finished with the visitors losing a player when, after a foul by another Washington player, Goss lost it with the ref and received a straight red card.

Although the Stan started the 2nd half with an extra man, Washington attacked first winning 2 corners with the ball from the 2nd being headed just wide. 3 minutes later and a ball from a Stan corner was headed clear then another Stan attack saw Armin catch. He then had to get down to 1st stop a Burns long range effort and then stop Campbell’s shot from the rebound in 56 minutes.

Campbell under pressure then hit the post when he tried to beat the keeper. Soon after he had a header put out for a corner. It was all mainly the Stan now although Washington had a long range shot in 61 minutes and then Regan had to save at the 2nd attempt.

In 63 minutes there was another joined up Stan attack and the cross into the box saw the ball go just wide. The ball was soon sent into the box again and Charmey at the far post put the ball into the net from Sayer’s header across the goal for 3-1.

The Stan were dominating with some good joined up play although the defence were also looking solid. In 67 minutes, Robinson headed just over but the flag was up. The visitors did get a rare move forward in 78 minutes with Regan getting out to make a great save. The Stan countered but Washington attacked again and got a corner from which they shot just wide in the crowded box.

In 81 minutes Regan caught a long range effort before sub Kerridge, who looked keen, shot wide. There was some late pressure form the visitors, including shooting over the bar in 88 minutes, but the Stan had achieved a comfortable victory and a place in the quarter finals.
