Heaton Stannington 7-0 Birtley Town

Northern League Division 2

After the win against Alnwick, the fans expected a win and goals which they definitely got. In fact by the end of the match they were in seventh heaven! Again there was only a small match day squad but it included, for the first time in a league match, Magic Mike who had flown in from the States. The performance was definitely not Mickey Mouse and those fans who had instead chosen to go and watch the Toon were left regretting their decision.

Heaton Stannington kicked off with the strong wind on their backs and quickly mastered the blustery conditions. Skipper Joe Wear crashed a shot against the crossbar after only three minutes and the same player saw his shot hit the upright just two minutes later. The home side finally got the break they deserved after ten minutes of play when Mike Creswick ran on to through ball and placed his shot wide of Mark Fish in the Birtley goal. They went two up midway through the first half with the goal of the day, and it was that man again Magic Mike. Receiving the ball just outside the centre circle Creswick hit an unstoppable shot from thirty five yards which flew into the net. After dominating the play for much of the first half they went further ahead five minutes before the interval when Creswick crossed from the right and Lewis Burns was on hand to make it 3-0 with a deft flick off the post.

The home side fared even better against the wind as Burns completed his hat trick with two more goals within fifteen minutes of the re-start. The Stan should have gone six up when they were awarded a penalty kick following a foul on Burns, however Lee Johnson's spot kick was well saved by Fish. The sixth goal did come however when substitute Gary Yates, on for Gary Dixon after 70 minutes, made an immediate impact when he crashed the ball home from inside the penalty area. With the visitors completely demoralised the rout was completed in the last minute when Yates cleverly lobbed Fish to the delight of the home fans.

After the match, there was no time for manager Derek Thompson to celebrate as he had to stand in as barman. He did though serve the pints with a huge grin on his face!
