Heaton Stannington 3-0 Darlington Railway Athletic

Northern League Division 2

The Stan played there 2nd match in 2 days as they hoped to win in consecutive matches for the 1st time this year. There was one change as Salim replaced Hoggins. There was a debut on the railway goal-line for 16 year old Ethan Landsdell who came in at the last minute when keeper Paul Griffith injured himself in the warm up.

The Stan attacked from the start and in 5 minutes an Imray header was blocked. It was then football table tennis for a while until in 13 minutes Wright got the ball and ran down the right, crossed to Holland in the box who passed to the advancing Salim who tapped it into the net. Darlington then had a corner with Smith catching the ball. Wright in 20 minutes made a great run, pursued by a defender, and crossed to the advancing Salim in the box but it was too fast for him to collect. Smith then had to come out to clear. Wright shot over before railway did the same.

There was then a relatively quiet period until the 29th minute when the ball landed in front of the advancing Salim who passed the keeper but, with the angle being too tight to shoot, the ball eventually went out for a corner. Burns took the corner which hit the near post and eventually went back out to him and he curled the ball back into the crowded box and into the far side of the net. Salim then advanced and was brought down just outside the box and the free kick was blocked. In 35 minutes he shot in the box but the keeper caught.

In 37 minutes Darlington finally attacked again but Burns eventually cleared. A minute later and Wright got the ball and sent it up the pitch where it hit and floored a Darlo player allowing Burns to get it and advance then he passed back to the advancing Imray who shot in the box for 3-0. Imray advanced again in 42 minutes but the keeper just got to it. The half finished with attacks from both teams.

It was a game to an extent of 2 halves as, after the Stan had secured the 3 points in the 1st half, the 2nd half had less entertainment value. The half did start lively with both having early efforts. In 50 minutes, a long ball to Salim saw him shoot wide under pressure. There was then a bad tackle on Sayer which saw him having to be replaced by Laidler 5 minutes later. Deagle had already replaced Imray at half time.

Wright kept trying to attack and in 60 minutes sent a cross into the box but the keeper got to it 1st. Wright then had 2 shots with the keeper catching one and the other going just wide. In 62 minutes Wright got through the defence and the ball blasted off the keeper for a corner which Hall sent across the box but it was not intercepted. Salim then ran into the box followed by a Burns run and 1-2 with Salim but he shot wide.

The visitors had their 1st attack for a long time in 74 minutes which Smith eventually dealt with. Smith was then under pressure again but made a catch. Burns shot wide in 77 minutes before a Railway player broke free but was stopped by Laidler. The last 10 minutes were relatively quiet though Wright shot wide and Burns made a great run but was blocked. There was action at the death as the match finished with wright skimming the bar and Smith at the other end having to make a catch.
