Heaton Stannington 2-1 West Allotment Celtic

Northern League Division 2

The Stan were playing local rivals West Allotment for the 2nd time in a row and like in the 1st match at Druid Park 11 days ago the Stan again came from behind to win. There were 2 changes with Middleton and Burns, making his 99th start, replacing Sakellaropoulos and Miller while Holland moved to defence. Celtic included 4 ex-Stan players.

Celtic threatened from the 1st minute when they put over the bar from 6 yards out. Celtic had a corner cleared after 3 minutes although both teams were trying to attack with Charmey having a shot blocked in 8 minutes. After 20 minutes Celtic miskicked in front of the Stan goal and a minute later wasted an attack.

In the 23rd minute Regan caught a long shot at the 2nd attempt. Celtic then attacked again and a poor performance by the defenders allowed ex-Stan Matty Hayton to shoot past them for 0-1. In 25 minutes the Stan countered and Hodgson in the Celtic goal miscleared for a corner. Burns then slipped and miss-hit a shot and then the Stan also shot wide and over. A Celtic attack was headed clear then another was kicked clear before Celtic shot wide.

In 35 minutes, another ex-Stan Shane Jones shot across the Stan goal with his effort going just wide. There was then a great solo run by Campbell past 2 defenders and he was then brought down in the box but nothing was given. Both teams were trying to attack and the half ended with Celtic shooting wide then the Stan having 2 corners cleared. The Celtic centre halves had been poor but the Stan were not testing them enough and overall it had been a poor 1st half for the relatively large watching crowd.

The start of the 2nd half saw Hodgson save from a Kerridge free kick then a catch. A ball from a Celtic corner was headed wide after 52 minutes. In 58 minutes, Campbell tried a speculative long shot but someone else was offside. In 61 minutes, a ball from a Celtic corner went through the crowd and deflected off a leg then the post before eventually being forced out for a corner which was cleared.

The Stan were back in the game in the 69th minutes when Charmey advanced down the left but was blocked and passed to Mason whose deflected shot rebounded to Campbell whose shot from the edge of the box went into the net for 1-1. The Stan kept up the pressure and 2 minutes later Charmey was blocked in the box twice. In 73 minutes, Burns went down the middle and passed to Charmey whose diagonal shot saw Hodgson just get to it with a great save. In 75 minutes, Celtic countered and shot just wide. In 77 minutes, the Stan attacked but Kerridge was blocked near the goal-line . The ball went back out to Campbell but an undeserved foul was given against him.

It was mainly Stan now and in 81 minutes a great cross from Holland saw the ball go to Campbell whose great header hit off the post. A great ball in by Kerridge was then blocked. Celtic then shot wide but in 84 minutes the Stan were in the lead. After a couple of tackles in the build-up, a great ball from Kerridge saw Campbell calmly slot it into the net for 2-1. The Stan made 2 late substitutions as they attempted to control the remainder of the match.

In the 93rd and final minute, a ball from a Celtic corner was cleared then headed across goal then a shot went just wide. The Stan won though, without playing particularly well. The win keeps the promotion hopes alive and means that since the Stan returned to the Northern League in 2013, they have won all 6 league ties against Celtic.
