Darlington Railway Athletic 0-4 Heaton Stannington

Northern League Division 2

The Stan were back on track, and had a 5th straight away win, as they steamed their way through the Darlington Railway men. On a warm evening, there were 5 changes from Saturday and the Stan also changed their formation, playing 3 at the back.

The home side had a track record (I promise this is the last railway pun) of letting in goals this season and they continued the tradition in the 4th minute when a Stan attack saw Dixon on the left pass back to Dean Imray, who was just outside the box in the middle, and he blasted the ball into the net.

The railway defence remained under pressure until a rare attack in 10 minutes saw Scott clear followed by a home shot wide. Robinson was becoming increasingly dangerous, as a result of his pace and, in 19 minutes, he held onto the ball well which was deflected for a corner and was subsequently headed wide by Leighton. After more pressure, Robinson sped up the wing in the 25th minute, trailing a defender behind him, and passed to Yates who shot over.

In the 33rd minute, a Darlington attack had to be cleared 3 times before Dan Robinson counter attacked and calmly took his time to shoot past the keeper. 3 minutes later and Imray passed up to Robinson who accelerated past a defender who brought him down. The free kick saw Jones shoot at the keeper.

In 38 minutes, a great ball by Jones to the advancing Robinson saw him free in the box but he shot just wide. After Smith caught a free kick, it was back to Robinson in the 40th minute who beat the defence and shot past the advancing keeper who just got a hand to the ball. Robinson continued to push for a 3rd goal as the half time whistle went.

The Stan made their 2nd half intentions clear when Yates shot wide 2 minutes into the 2nd half. The home side did then hit the side netting before Jones had a good run followed by more Stan pressure. A rare Railway attack was dealt with well in 55 minutes before 4 minutes later, a corner by Jones saw the ball go across the crowded box and was headed in from the right by Kevin Leighton. 5 minutes later and Imray tried a chip but the keeper got up for it.

Another rare attack saw the home side shoot wide in 71 minutes. 5 minutes later and Johnson passed to the advancing Blackett but his shot was blocked by the also advancing keeper. It remained mainly pressure by the Stan although Williams made a good clearance after 81 minutes. Jones then sent a great long ball to Blackett who moved then crossed to the advancing Gary Yates who scored to make it 4-0. The match finished on a quieter note and in a comfortable 4-0 win for the Stan.
