Sunderland West End 0-3 Heaton Stannington

Northern League Division 2

After the midweek demolition of Newcastle University the Stan made two changes for the visit to The Nissan Sports Complex with Middleton replacing Stoddart and Wright coming in for Paterson. The home side, who were promoted from the Wearside League last year, had found life in the Northern League tough although wins v Birtley, Washington and Chester Le Street saw them clear of the bottome three. They included former RCA Goalkeeper Neil Bussey and Ex Darlington RA striker Chris Tarn in a relatively inexperienced team. With West End's gound not yet meeting the league's grading standard it was a sparse crowd that saw the Stan kick off at the host's temporary home although a quick head count showed there to be a good travelling contingent of 25 Stan Army.

Wright was the first to show any attacking intent when he flashed a shot across the face of goal in the 4th minute but it was West End that soon got into a rhythm and Tarn should have done better than dragging a shot wide after a mistake by Bailey. Cassidy was causing the Stan problems and Ball made a fine save at his near post to deny him before Wright got free down the left but shot from a tight angle when Kerridge was better placed in the middle for a cross.

The Stan had to make a change in the 17th minute when Mason replaced Hoggins who had a hamstring strain and then Hall almost got a touch on a great driven cross by Wright before Charmey was cautioned for an innocuous looking challenge. Bailey soon followed him into the book for a foul on Cassidy as the hosts built up some pressure and they almost took the lead on 28 mins when the Stan defence stood off and Thompson rattled the bar from 25 yards.

This seemed to finally wake the Stan up and Wright beat 2 men on good run before being fouled by Forster 25 yards from goal, Charmey took charge of the situation and curled the free kick past Bussey into the far corner to open the scoring on 31 minutes.

Sunderland should have levelled immediately when Cassidy crossed from the left but Tarn headed wide when it looked easier to score. The host's were soon to regret the miss when Kerridge played a free kick into Wright's feet on the right side of the box and he found Sayer unmarked with a chip to the back post and he inform midfielder headed home from close range to double the Stan's advantage.

The Stan continued to press and Hall and Charmey linked to set Mason away down the right but his cross was too deep before Sayer forced a right wing corner which was again hit beyond the far post. The half ended with Ball having to be sharp off his line to deny Cassidy on the edge of his box.

HT: West End 0 - 2 Stan

The Stan were straight on the front foot and Sayer and Wright combined but Mason couldn't get a touch on the latter's cross while at the other Tarn escaped Middleton but scuffed his effort straight at Ball. Another good Stan move down the left saw Wright cross again for Mason but he couldn't finish at the back post. West End were reduced to 10 men on 70 minutes when Richardson and Sayer clashed with home number 7 shown a straight red for seemingly sticking his shoulder into Sayer's face.

A great turn from Wright on the halfway line saw him gallop clear but as he advanced into the box he blazed over the top with Kerridge screaming for a pass on the penalty spot. Sayer then brought a save out of Bussey at his near post but he wouldn't be denied for long as he met the resultant corner with a bullet header for his 5th goal in five games and a sixth of the season in total.

Imray replaced Kerridge soon after and then Allan replaced Charmey as the Stan started to run down the clock, Mason was booked for kicking out after a foul before history was made as Wright become the first ever Stan player to be sin binned after 81 minutes.

The last action saw Sayer cross to the far post but Mason couldn't get above it and his header went over the top.

FT: West End 0 - 3 Stan

After a shaky start the Stan had ran out easy winners against a limited West End side who seldom troubled the Stan back four once the first goal had gone in. Ball and his defence recorded a second successive clean sheet and the Stan looked lively throughout with Charmey, Wright , Kerridge and Sayer causing the host's numerous problems going forward.

After the disappointment of letting a two goal lead slip at Willington the Stan had bounced back and scored 10 goals in a week without conceding, and the recent good run see's us climb to 4th in the league table.

Tougher test's await this week as we first travel to North Shields to conclude our League Cup Group A games before hosting in form Carlisle City in the 2nd Division game of the day next Saturday.
