Sophia ZoetEthnicity: DutchSex: FemaleAge: 23Appearance:Hair: Dirty strawberry blonde, wavy, past shouldersEyes: BrownSkin: Peach, lightly tan, some frecklesWeight: 144 lbsLength: 5'5 ftOther: Sophia has two forms, her human form, and what she calls 'Lamia' where below her waist is the tail of a sea serpent. As Lamia, her body is over 27 feet long, and weights 385 pounds. She has seven large fins, including her tail, and two smaller fins that stretch from her forearms along the side of her hands. She has scales ranging in color from green, to pink, red and blue. Above her waist, besides her forearms, she is completely human in appearance.
Date of Birth: November 22nd
Place of Birth: Flanders, Belgium
Relatives: Parents, Daniel and Tabitha. Grandparents, Sanne and Daisy.
Powers: When transformed, Sophia can breathe both salt and fresh water with the help of gills along her hips. The gills seal when she is above water and she can breathe air normally and move around like a snake. There is a potent neurotoxin secreted from the needle-like spines lining each of Sophia's fins, which are hollow to carry the poison from her bloodstream. The venom is also transferred through the finlets along her back, her claws and her own split blood.
Symptoms of poisoning occur within seconds and cause double vision, sweats, respiratory depression and severe pain, as if the flesh is burning superficially, but cold and numb feeling under the skin. The symptoms can last from six to twelve hours, at its greatest intensity within 5 to 30 minutes. The lasting affects depend on the depth of penetration and how much venom was released into the body. In extreme cases, the venom can cause temporary paralysis of the affected limb, blackening of skin and necrosis (tissue death) around the sting.
Power Limitations: Sophia cannot breathe under water in her human form, and while transformed chlorine is highly toxic to her - she wouldn't survive long in chlorine treated water. While Sophia's blood is still toxic in her human form, she has no means to secrete it from her body. Her venom is not harmful unless introduced into the body by a sting/scratch or ingested. It is never deadly and can be denatured by soaking the sting in hot water. When transformed, her tail can be used in attack as a way to grab people or bludgeon them. She can't lift more than five hundred pounds with her tail and her human half is of average strength. Her claws can easily break flesh and scratch away at wood but are not sharp enough to pass through armoring or metals.
To paralyze someone completely, a substantial amount of toxin would have to be injected directly into the blood stream. The paralysis lasts ten hours at most. While paralyzed the mind would still be active, as the paralysis reduces oxygen demands of the body dramatically, but because the toxin does not cross the blood-brain barrier, neural activity in the brain and from the eyes and ears are always intact. The venom consists of a mixture of proteins, including the hemolytic stonustoxin, the neurotoxic trachynilysin and the cardioactive cardioleputin.
Background: Sophia's parents migrated from Flanders, Belgium when Sophia was six years old. Her grandparents, who migrated along with her parents to the United States, took care of Sophia the most when she was a child. Her early mutation came with little surprise, as her family carried the mutant gene on her father's side, with her grandfather and great grandfather being mutants. She had a particularly close relationship with her grandfather, Sanne. Before coming to America, he was a fishermen with his own boat. She loved hearing his various fish stories, and showed an interest in aquatic life at a young age. Whenever anyone asked her, she said she wanted to be an Oceanographer. As Sophia got older, she became more interested in other types of animals and decided when she was thirteen she wanted to be a vegetarian. In school, she hung with a liberal crowd, normally being labeled as hippies by other classmates. She was very involved in animal activism, particularly with PETA, MarineBio, and eventually SMAC, a Pro-Animal organization against a particular company Marine Life Sciences. Taking down MLS become her main goal, she organized rallies, protests, and made her own informational pamphlets. When Sophia was twenty one, she was organizing a protest that turned violent, and the authorities were called. She managed to escape arrest, but her grandfather and several of her friends were taken in. Prisons had started taking blood samples to test for the mutant gene, and when her grandfather was found to be a mutant, instead of being released he was transferred to one of the first Mutant Control Camps. Sophia was furious, as his involvement in the protest had been nothing more than a bystander and he was old and not a threat to anyone. While the family was fighting for his release, he died by a condition that could've been easily prevented by medication they had been withholding from him. While her family was suing the state and doing nothing but drawing attention to their mutant heritage, Sophia had silent anger brewing. She became more extreme in her activism, not only for animals, but now, for mutants. She took part in torching the cars of public figures, vandalizing homes and corporate buildings, and physically attacking people. As the United States turned more against mutants year after year, Sophia and several of her friends joined terrorist teams to fight for what was right. Some friends she lost to Sentinel attacks, which she saw as the biggest threat to mutant kind.
At the first appearance of Apocalypse in the West Coast, Sophia thought this would be a turning point for mutantkind. A chance to show humans like the President what mutants were made of, that they wouldn't just allow their kindred to be shipped off to camps and exterminated. This opinion changed when she traveled West and saw all the destruction and needless death that had been caused. Apocalypse and his minions weren't making an example of the powerful, but of the weak, and she could not agree with the man's ideals.
Sophia often sided with Apocalypse when confronted with Marauders, only to save her life and avoid conflict, but she steered clear of the territories as much as possible. She did the same for the East Coast when Therizo came into power, a corporation which was sadly more corrupt and twisted than the last government by far. Mostly she joined with the Acolytes off and on, which were sparse and scattered since the destruction of Utopia, until there were simply none left.
Sophia met the Sisterhood shortly after they had been booted from this mysterious island the X-Men hoarded away from the rest of the world. She helped them survive on the streets, and became close with the Sisterhood's leader, Clover Young. The two were both vegan, and animal lovers, and she found the girl's powerful magic memorizing. She liked the idea of a group of women banding together to protect each other, and so her joining the Sisterhood was just the natural order of things.
Animal activism has never taken a backpedal to mutants, and if asked Sophia states she feels more of a kinship with fish than with humans or mutants.
Personality: Even though Sophia has grown to hate humans and thinks mankind is doomed at best she can be very caring and compassionate when it comes to certain things. Sophia doesn't like to see innocents wronged or harmed in any situation, so will often protect civilians even if its not the best interest of her or the group she is with.
Special Notes: Model is Bethony Joy Galeotti.
