Powers: Power Mimicry: Charlie has the mutant ability to temporarily replicate the powers of other mutants through physical contact. When he gains a new ability he also gains a basic idea of how the power functions. Charlie’s eyes turn black when he’s using his powers.
Power Limitations: Charlie’s powers require direct skin to skin contact to work and have no effect on normal humans, aliens, or metahumans. When gaining a new ability he only gets a basic idea of how to use them; ie: if he borrowed Trent’s telekinesis he would be able to use them to pick something up but would lack the fine control Trent has gained through years of practice. When absorbing a physical mutation Charlie’s body undergoes changes rapidly to mimic the original, a process that can be very painful depending on the degree of difference.
He can not absorb more than one power at a time and his access to the powers only lasts an hour at most.
Hobbies and Interests: Charlie is a skilled singer and plays most anything with strings. When he isn’t writing music he writes poetry. He loves to reads, especially books about history and art. He enjoys cooking. He likes to draw and has a fair amount of skill. He loves body modifications, especially tattoos. He has a pet cat he named Rasputin. Practices Eastern Orthodox Christianity. After months living in War’s territory and acting as one of her closest allies Charlie has developed his skills as an actor and liar.
Background: Charlie’s earliest memory involves his father screaming about mutants and walking away. He and his mom moved out of their house shortly after that point and into his paternal grandparent's tiny two bedroom apartment in Virginia. Despite the sudden shift in his young life he doesn't remember being sad at all. Quite the opposite actually.
The Elder Stahls were no nonsense German immigrants who didn't give Charlie any leniency just because of his age. They spoke to him like an adult and expected him to conduct himself as such in their presence. Despite their stern demeanor both Birgit and Rutger adored their grandson and took every opportunity to shower him with their quiet affections. His grandmother instilled in him his love for cooking and literature while his grandfather taught him to play the guitar.
In his father’s absence Charlie’s mother repaired her relationship with her older brother, the pair often taking trips across the country to visit hIs only other family stateside. Charlie loved the trips to Albuquerque because it meant he got to see his cousins, Trent and Rusti easily becoming the closest thing to brothers the young boy would ever know. He even asked his mother if he could adopt her maiden name to be more like his best friends.
He learned about his "gifts" at an early age, his ability to mimic the powers of others activating during a hug from his mother. He was initially afraid, memories of his father screaming about mutant filth filling his young head. It wasn't until his mother and grandparents sat him down and explained their gifts that he relaxed. It wasn't easy having a secret but he felt stronger knowing he shared it with his family.
It was around this time Charlie's guardians decided to pull him out of school. With the growing number of anti mutant laws and hate crimes against their kind going unchecked there wasn't much room for the teen to argue. Homeschooling was tough and lonely but no one suspected him or his family and he wanted to keep it that way. He had heard what rumors about what happened to mutants who drew attention to themselves, fading into the background was a small price to pay to avoid such a fate. His correspondence with his cousin’s doubled around that year, the craving for contact outside of his home driving him to email both boys almost daily. Charlie was surprised to learn that Trent was a mutant as well, the shared secret strengthening their bond.
His only other escape during those years was his art. His love for paints and canvas leading him to enter into local art shows. The owner of the local tattoo parlor took notice of his art and adopted Charlie as his assistant, teaching the young mutant everything he knew about his craft and the world as he saw it.
Upon graduating from school Charlie took a job at the shop and began taking classes at the local community college. His life wasn't glamorous or fast paced but he was happy. Despite the growing violence and discord in the world around him Quantico remained as sleepy and quaint as it always had been. It was almost enough to make him forget how dangerous it was for a mutant in the US.
Almost.
His father's return marked the beginning of the end of Charlie's life as he knew it. Michael Stahl was a seasoned FBI Agent and had spent years using his position to hide them in plain sight but he couldn't maintain their cover much longer, not with Sentinels patrolling the streets, not with the stakes so high. His last play was getting them out of the country. He wouldn't be able to join them but he would insure their safety as he always had.
Charlie hated him for it. The man who had walked out on them years ago was suddenly there threatening to take away every bit of happiness and normalcy he had built for himself. He knew Canada was the safest place for his family but he couldn't run , not while there was still a chance.
The night the family was set to leave Charlie sprang the news that he planned to remain behind, promising to be careful and to stay in touch. He swore to his grandmother that he would be safe.
He wasn't.
It wasn't two weeks after his family had fled the country that Charlie was caught at a random checkpoint. He had made the trip dozens of times but he wasn't prepared for the upgraded security measures. He was going to be caught and taken away and there was nothing he could do to prevent it. His stupid powers weren't even strong enough for him to go down fighting.
If asked to recount exactly what happened next Charlie will say he can't remember, that everything happened too fast. One minute he was standing in line, waiting to be taken away. The next it was raining fire.
The checkpoint and the guards were ash and his grandfather was dying in his arms. The wizened old man had come back for him, had used his powers to save him, had traded his life to keep Charlie safe.
Charlie wanted to stay with the man who had raised him, to say goodbye properly, but Rutger wouldn't hear it. Clasping his grandson's hand he passed on his gift for protection and urged the boy to run.
With his immediate family safely tucked away in Canada and no one left in Quantico, Charlie turned to the family he hadn’t seen in years.
He and his cousin’s had corresponded since childhood, first letters and then emails but it had been months since he’d spoken to either of them. Could he really just expect them to stop their lives and take him in during a crisis? Rusti had always been someone he could turn to for advice and even Trent had indulged him but he was a mutant and a fugitive. He didn’t want to endanger the scant family he had left but he needed help.
In the end desperation won out and he headed South down the coast with everything he could fit in the back of his car, an IP address based in New Orleans the only guide he had.
Arriving in Louisiana, Charlie sent an email to both of the Piotrowski boy’s and waited. He was surprised how quickly Trent responded. He was asked to meet his older cousin at a nearby theatre and in that moment his life changed forever.
Trent had spent the years since they’d lost touch leading a group of X-Men with his little brother close under him and they needed his help. A former member of their team had defected and joined Apocalypse's forces and Trent wanted to keep an eye on her. She couldn’t know someone was watching her, it would have to be someone she had never met and someone that didn’t know any of the X-Men’s secrets. The prospect of going undercover into Apocalypse’s territory was terrifying but his family needed him and after what had happened to his grandfather he couldn’t let them down, so he agreed.
Traveling North to Oregon, Charlie settled into War's territory without drawing attention to himself. For weeks he kept his head down and planned, waiting for right opportunity to approach Noelle. War ran her territory like a good General and everyone obeyed her rules without question. Failure to do so drew negative attention and negative attention was not something you wanted from Noelle Mackenzie.
While Charlie hadn't necessarily done anything against the rules, his attempted neutrality and general failure to join in with his community was deemed strange. She wanted to know who he was and what he hoped to gain as one of her subjects. She wanted to see if he was a fanatic, if he was one more person hoping to overthrow her.
This was his chance, this was the opening he had been waiting for.
Playing up the lost and confused role Charlie offered his fealty and powers to Noelle without hesitation, his ability to mimic others earning him the moniker Doppleganger and a place near her inner circle.
As one of Noelle’s chosen pet projects Charlie had a front row seat when it came to her running her territory. She was ruthless and dogged, methodical and at times cruel. She had big plans but kept them close to her chest even when she was surrounded by her closest lieutenants. She trusted no one but there were times when Charlie thought maybe she wanted to. He stayed close; listening when she wanted someone to talk to, fighting beside her when she commanded him, acting as a friend would whenever he could. She didn’t give anything away easily but the young man was determined and slowly she began to let things slip; plans, ideas, dreams.
And then it happened.
Apocalypse went into battle with the X-Men and was beaten.
Everything was thrown into chaos.
War and her closest disciples made plans to break away. Charlie was invited to come along but he couldn’t. Leaving Oregon with her, disappearing, hadn’t been a part of the plan. As close as he felt to Noelle it wasn’t real. He was only there to spy on her. He needed to get home, he needed to get back to Trent and Rusti.
When Noelle and the others made their move Charlie used the in fighting to disappear and once again headed south, following rumors about a mutant safe haven in Colorado.
Arriving in Black Hawk, Charlie was surprised to find the city in shambles. Conquest and Famine had brought carnage to the region and the X-Men were helping the citizens rebuild. He couldn’t believe his luck. Seeking out his cousin’s Charlie was lead to a small Island off the Coast, the new location of the X-men’s Base and a mutant safe haven hidden from the world.
Personality: Charlie is very much the strong and silent type. He’s shy but he’s long grown used to being called a ‘tortured artist’ or ‘brooding’ by people who haven’t taken the time to get to know him. He would self identify as a Dreamer, often more interested in his own thoughts than in whatever is happening around him. He’d also call himself an indifferent asshole, one who’s simply not interested in getting to know people. He blames an isolated childhood for both of these antisocial behaviors.
When he does socialize he is hesitant to initiate conversation, shy to open up about his past, and generally just an all around reserved individual. None of this should be mistaken as a sign that he is self conscious or possessing of low self esteem. He’s actually quite confident. For those rare few who manage to break through his tough exterior he is charmingly soft spoken, insightful, and giving with his attentions. Charlie is a liberal bisexual vegetarian.
Special Notes: Played by Tyler Hoechlin. Charlie can't swim.
