Iwan Aurelio Bautista
Code-Name: Ghost
Position: Council, Grade school teacher
Ethnicity: Welsh with Spanish ancestry
Sex: Male
Age: 35
Appearance:
Hair: A rough crop of dark brown curls that touches at his ears and brushes the back of his neck.
Eyes: Grey-blue, piercing, but troubled.
Skin: Pale, but prone to tanning over burning and with minimal effort.
Height: 182 cm.
Build: 12 st. and lanky, with decent muscle tone to suggest healthy exercise but nothing overt.
Other: Tall, dark, and pale, with a beard that comes in far too easily and sad eyes, a perpetually distracted expression. He wears reading glasses and somber colors, holds himself in a slouch and, notably, is rarely touching the ground...or otherwise touchable.
Date Of Birth: June 10, 1985.
Place Of Birth: Devil's Bridge, Wales.
Education: An ordinary in Mutant Studies from Cardiff University.
Was working on his Ph.D when the program was shut down due to outside pressures.
Important Relatives: He knows of no surviving relatives. He is determined, however, to keep up hope he will find his wife again.
Powers: Intangibility allows him to phase through objects and people as though they weren't there. In the same vein, he can phase objects and people through himself - essentially the same process but for appearances. While intangible, psychic and physical attacks are useless against him, and he functions much as a ghost. Gravity is also a non-starter as far as he's concerned, and while intangible he is immune to its forces, able to will himself to 'float' rather than suffer dramatic falls.
One theory posited to him as to how this works was that his body exists in the space between dimensions while intangible, though he only sees this one.
Whatever the cause, while intangible he suffers no need to breathe, eat, or (normally) to sleep. Normal bodily functions are on hold so long as he does not take physical form.
Power Limitations: Unfortunately, his default state appears to be intangibility. It takes conscious effort on his part to hold physical form, whether to touch things or be touched by them. This effort is taxing, and while he does not have physical needs when intangible, if he spends too much time tangible he will need to replenish his energy with food and rest as normal. Also, yeah, he needs to breathe when holding a physical form.
Sleep is a particularly tricky endeavor, however. Because taking tangible form requires so much energy, and because he defaults to intangible form, sleep is required after great bouts of corporeality and tends to end in awkward conversations after falling through ceilings or drifting up through floors. As a result, he doesn't get much sleep even when he absolutely needs it, unless his powers are dampened.
Thankfully, certain objects are easily taken with him into intangibility without much effort, so nudity is not a constant problem. This stems from a familiarity with the object, however, so most of his clothing tends to be old, worn, and well-loved. His glasses are therefore treated with great care. The less familiarity he has with an object, the more concentration is required to keep it 'on' him while intangible.
While physical and psychic attacks are ineffective, there are still forms of attack which do work on his intangible form. Energy-based, magic, or electrical attacks can harm him or restrain him. Extremes in temperature are painful even if they aren't necessarily harmful, and he cannot withstand long periods of time in high heat or low cold. Flame hurts, but doesn't burn, and the same goes for ice. There are also certain materials he cannot pass through, usually of extremely high density or magical nature.
While tangible, however, all forms of attack are as effective as they would be on any other person. He is no more capable of withstanding a knife attack or a bullet to the head while tangible than any other human, and psychic attacks are just as successful as they would be otherwise.
Additionally, too much strain on his energy levels, whether due to maintaining physical form or suffering successful attacks, can render him incapable of becoming corporeal. In this case, he is prone to fading visibly, or blinking in and out of vision, until such time as he can rest and recover.
Hobbies and Interests: Normally, he's quite outdoorsy, enjoying a good hike or swim where he can. As a child, he enjoyed sports a great deal - particularly football... Which he still occasionally puts sincere effort into picking up a game of, even if it's a pain in the arse to deal with the aftereffects.
Background: Devil's Bridge was a village of the sort they wrote quaint country tales about. Barely over four hundred in population, everyone knew everyone, which meant that when his mutant powers manifested, his plans to get out of that tiny, backwards place were expedited considerably in order to avoid the fallout that would certainly come from staying. He finished secondary school early, shoving off for university as quick as he could. He dipped between focuses for a little while, but after spending some time in the big city where diversity was more encouraged and accepted, he settled on Mutant Studies for his degree plan. Classes were difficult, but he made it through his studies largely by recording lectures to go over later, and partnering up with a pretty young classmate for help... When it turned out that simply being around her made it not only easier to focus, but made it possible for him to maintain a physical form at will so long as she was present, he used it as an excuse to spend more time around her - to study, of course!
But he was head over heels before long. The grounding she provided was so much more than just his powers, and towards the end of their degrees he finally worked up the courage to ask her on a date... And after the first went tentatively well, another, and another, and after graduation as they each found work in the city, eventually they decided together it was only logical to move in to the same flat. Economical, even.
As to be expected, their relationship progressed naturally enough - friends came and went through the years, but they stuck by each other's side through and through, and one day he proposed...with a caveat. He had recently applied to a Ph.D program at Cardiff University and received his acceptance, but wanted to wait until they were settled to get married properly. Her acceptance, he would swear for years afterward, made him the happiest man on earth (and, possibly, wherever the rest of him was when he wasn't with her).
In the meantime, she was more than happy with the job she'd found in her field, and while she didn't like waiting, she knew it was important to him... But all plans came to a staggering halt when increasing public anxiety and violence towards mutants forced the university to close down its mutant-related study programs. His thesis had focused on mutant education, and was one of the first on the chopping block to appease the masses - the news was devastating, but as tensions rose, he and his fiancée were forced to flee the city either way.
Out of instinct, they went home first... Devil's Bridge was far more inhospitable than Cardiff, however, and that first, brief visit with his family in years was the last time he saw them.
They left Wales for England shortly after, thinking London might be more receptive, and on the way decided the first thing they would do when they arrived was make official the bond between them. Married in Oxford by an unwitting priest, they kept on Eastward until they hit the big city, where things were all right for a while. Neither was visibly a mutant, and as long as they stayed together, it was easy to pretend long enough to get a tiny, cramped flat on her income (not wanting to risk him getting caught trying to get a job).
And then, as Apocalypse rose, things took a turn for the ultimate worse. The war and the virus sent them running again, into hiding and under the radar as far as they could fly... Until one day, he came across a patrol of the X-Men, alone.
He joined the group in New Orleans in hopes he would find her there - or that, one day, she would show up. Some time later, several homes later, he still holds out hope that he'll find her. In the meantime, he has every intention of helping make Paradise Cove into a safe place... a place she would be happy to call home.
Personality: He's a little awkward, a little quiet, very private and very content to keep to himself when possible. He likes people well enough, but being on in that capacity is as mentally draining as being tangible is physically. He likes children, though, as they do plenty of the on for him!
Special Notes: PB: Hugh Dancy. Wears a wedding band.
