Powers: Astral Teleportation. Vortex cannot teleport instantly, but is able to teleport through open portals. Other people and objects can move through the portal without injury. He's a long distance teleporter and is able to teleport to most locations as long as he has once been there or knows the longitude and latitude of the area (he has a smart watch GPS system he never takes off). Dallas can see through his portals but cannot hear anything. When they are open they emit a sound similar to crackling thunder (louder or quieter depending on the portal's size).
Power Limitations: Dallas is unable to make portals wider than fifteen feet in diameter. The minimum distance Dallas can teleport is two hundred miles; if he were to teleport a closer distance it would knock him and anyone else traveling with him unconscious. It could also cause other complications, such as port breaks, (a port broken before the desired destination), or port disruptions (a port ending in a completely different location than desired). This is also the case if Dallas overexerts himself and continues teleporting anyway, but in that situation more commonly a headache or weakened state is the only side affect.
Hobbies and Interests: Dallas loves night life, crowds, and a good party. He considers himself a connoisseur of sorts when it comes to drugs of any kind. He is an excellent kick boxer. He loves to travel and is fascinated by different cultures and languages. He can order good beer anywhere in this world and has a decent grasp on the Romantic languages, such as French and Italian. He is fluent in Spanish and Thai. Before the war he loved to surf and skateboard.
Background: Dallas was born to James and Amy King, a surprise that resulted in a shotgun wedding. The marriage was an unhappy one so by the time Dallas was three they had divorced. Partial custody was granted so Amy could see Dallas on the weekends, though that rarely happened after Amy moved across state with her new husband and their baby, Clover. Dallas didn't see much of his mother, and James was a very busy man who viewed Dallas as an inconvenience. He was rarely home so from a young age Dallas had to learn to take care of himself. It made for a lonely childhood. When Dallas was seven years old, James's younger brother Brandon moved in with them. His uncle always had time for him and Dallas instantly looked up to him. After a few months, the attention began to turn sexual, a situation that escalated and continued until shortly after Dallas's tenth birthday, when James found out. Brad was arrested immediately, though Dallas didn't initially understand why. Since he was young, and it had been going on so long, he had difficulty recognizing what happened as sexual abuse. Even though Brad was abusive and manipulative, in Dallas's mind, he had been his only friend. Saying so only brought on a flood of disbelief, disgust and anger from his parents, eventually causing Dallas to turn the blame on himself. Dallas testified against his uncle as expected, who plead guilty and was sentenced to seven years in prison. The family never spoke about what happened again but it certainly shaped the negative relationship he had with his parents - the two never looked at him quite the same after that. Amy blamed James for never noticing, causing a bigger rift in the already divided family, while Dallas and James' already strained relationship never recovered. Over time, they grew to hate each other.
Well into his teenage years, Dallas could never quite separate need for nurturance from sex - all his relationships were almost always based on sex. He became very compulsive, whether it was inappropriate sexual encounters, a dangerous stunt to impress his friends or experimenting with drugs. Since his family and home life left much to be desired, Dallas's friends had always been the most important thing in the world to him. He felt like the adopted brother to so many families as usually his friend's parents liked him. He was by far the closest to the Santiago's and his friend Raquel.
The Anti-Mutant movement in the United States had gotten worse and worse, and when his little sister Clover started to physically mutate there wasn't much they could do to hide her mutation. Amy and her father Wayne decided to flee America to the more mutant accepting country of Japan. Amy asked Dallas to come along, but he decided against it. He had never felt like he fit in with them. He still used his powers to help them get into the other country, and visited them occasionally once they got settled in. He ended up moving to Vegas with Raquel, where he started his first year of university, studying in linguistics. Culture, travel and language had always been one of his passions. While he and Raquel learned to count cards, Dallas used his powers to travel the world - practicing his language skills first hand and meeting so many amazing people along the way.
Those were the happiest years of his life, he was surrounded by friends, and thanks to the card counting he wasn't hurting for money, and having a blast day after day. Together he and Raquel robbed casinos for their money the somewhat honest way. When the biggest casinos started putting mutant sensors in the entrances the two were nearly caught several times. It wasn't long before their antics got the attention of the wrong people. The good times never lasted forever.
Dallas ended up getting taken down by some sentinels, and he was never quite sure what happened to Raquel, a guilt that still nags at him. At first he was shipped off to one of the MCI camps but after his powers were deemed useful, he was sent to a military base in Texas called Fort Holden. He was forced into training and servitude, using his powers to move equipment and save on traveling expenses. He was treated like a involuntary soldier, and while he excelled in the training and war games, it was obvious with every inspection of either his cell, uniform, or protocols that this sloppy surfer boy was not cut out for the military.
After the murder of the President and the fall of the government, the U.S. Military became more and more desperate. Power hungry Generals began to turn on each other, and more specifically, the conscripted mutants in their care. As they were making rounds executing mutants, a usually cruel female Colonel turned a blind eye to his escape.
Once outside, Dallas found the west coast and his beloved California had been lain to waste by Apocalypse. He figured his father and Brad were probably dead, but honestly didn't shed any tears. He went looking for Raquel and his friends but much of their old stomping grounds had been destroyed. He searched for his mother in Japan and was brought news of her death. He feared the worst for Clover, until he found out she'd struck out on her own and returned to America.
It amused him his kid sister had turned into a bit of a bad girl. She was a leader of her own gang, the Sisterhood. While there was some contention over it among some of the more feminist members, Dallas was invited to join the Sisterhood with open arms. He had no qualms being a part of such a group, and thought it was actually pretty lucky to be surrounded by a bunch of beautiful women.
The group dedicated most of their time to collecting mystical artifacts to help build Clover's magical abilities, but had a few run ins with Apocalypse and the X-Men over the years. He found his sister's lust for power increasingly disturbing but could do nothing to stop her.
When the war between Therizo and Apocalypse escalated, the Sisterhood decided to try and lay low. This plan failed when their hideout was discovered by Therizo's sentinels. The team scattered and had to move further west despite having no fondness for Apocalypse or his ideals. Clover got a bit greedy when she discovered one of the Horseman carried a mystical dagger once owned by Ozymandias, the scribe of Apocalypse, and decided to try and pull off an impossible heist. They were discovered and attacked, and while Dallas was able to teleport his sister and the others to safety, he was not so lucky.
Dallas was captured by Seraph, the Horseman Conquest of Apocalypse. The man found Dallas's powers to be convenient and after weeks of torture and drug conditioning, forced him into servitude. Controlled by a collar around his neck (and often, a leash) that would explode if Seraph's heart stopped, if he moved more than a hundred yards away from Seraph, or if the collar was removed. An additional mechanism administered volts of electricity, and Seraph could activate and deactivate Dallas's powers at will.
Dallas became completely dependent on the powerful barbiturate drugs Seraph and Cae gave him, and he was a slave and a beloved pet to the psychotic couple for nearly a year. Due to the manipulative nature of the abuse he began to see himself as less of a person, and deserving of whatever was done to him. Seraph used Dallas's long distance teleportation powers to quickly quell uprisings, and to help further the destruction spread by Apocalypse. While chained to his hip, Dallas witnessed Seraph leveling entire cities, and was forced to murder innocent people more then he could ever admit to anyone.
The day the X-Men staged an attack against Apocalypse and his Horseman, Dallas was rescued. That was only a footnote in comparison to the fact Apocalypse was successfully killed. The Horsemen themselves were far from gone, and the war far from over, but for the first time in a long time, Dallas was free again.
Personality: Dallas is optimistic, and sports a devil may care attitude. He is very flirtatious, though that is mostly for laughs. He usually assumes the role of the entertainer/performer and seems to live to accommodate other people, sometimes at his own expense. He tends to ignore or put off problems, often avoiding too much responsibility along the way. He's good at hiding negative emotions he feels as unnecessary, so even when in the worst of moods he is very outgoing and friendly, and has a hard time recognizing when it's time to quit fooling around. He has a bit of a drug problem - he has been caught saying he will try anything once. Whenever there is a chance to try something new, Dallas is like a kid in a candy store. He smokes pot sometimes but remains firm there are much better things out there.
