Eulalia "Lyla" WirthCodename: N/A
Position: Peacekeeper
Ethnicity: European American
Sex: Female
Age: 18
Appearance:
Hair: dark brown, kept cropped just at ear length if she can help it. She keeps it out of her face with crisscrossed bobby pins or barettes, or the occasional headband.
Eyes: hazel--green undertones are usually the most prominent, but brownish flecks muddy the tone of them.
Skin: inclined toward fairness, but isn't pale per sei. When she uses her ability, her skin grows tender and blotchy bruises form, especially on her torso, varying in color from deep purple to sickly yellow-green. These generally heal at the normal rate for bruises
Weight: 110 pounds
Height: 5'2"
Other: Lyla's clothing style could be categorized as tough girl cute. Her wardrobe colors of choice really lean toward pink and black, but she's long relied on staple browns and greens--neutral earth tones that allow for blending into the background wherever possible.
Date Of Birth: June 6, 2003
Place Of Birth: Valencia, California
Education: Lyla has a private school education up through eighth grade, and whatever he could glean from books and the internet since then. The war between Apocalypse and Therizo interrupted her education pretty thoroughly.
Mother:
Name: Flora Wirth (Deceased)
Age: 32
Race: Human
Father:
Name: Eugene Scott (Deceased)
Age: 34
Race: Mutant (light/color manipulation)
Other Relatives:
Meribeth "Meri" Wirth, little sister, 14, deceased
Cornelius "Neil" Wirth, little brother, 12, deceased
Powers: Lyla is capable of reanimating the dead. At its simplest level, she can take control of a dead animal (including dead humans and mutants) in any state of decay and puppet the corpse as-is.
She can combine the parts of multiple dead animals together into one construct, but this process takes time and greater energy. With a little more energy applied, she can give an animated corpse or construct a basic command to carry out. She can also build more complex commands into a construct, animating them to a point that they can operate with a level of independence similar to a simple dog. However, both animated corpses and constructs require a daily recharge.
Animated corpses and constructs do not feel pain, so they can take a lickin' and still keep kickin'. Unless she is directly puppeting them, their fighting style is animalistic--biting and clawing. They're no ninjas, but they can certainly mob a target.
Animated corpses and constructs also do not rot while under her power. The faint odor of decay tends to linger around them, especially if they were already well on their way to compost before she began animating them, but it's usually tolerable.
Power Limitations: A mutant corpse does not retain abilities (outside of permanent physical mutations) when animated by Lyla's ability. Since animating corpses and building constructs requires energy from Lyla, she can only do so much. Puppeting whole corpses takes less energy, but she can still usually only puppet as many as she can concentrate on at a given time. The more she has to divide her attention, the harder it becomes. She might be able to make up to five animated corpses all mob the same thing from the same direction, but if the puppeting requires finesse, she really needs to concentrate on just one, two maximum, and that's if she doesn't need to focus on protecting herself, as well.
When it comes to giving more complex commands to animated corpses or constructs, she can infuse them gradually over time--days or weeks--while they lay dormant, and they can remain dormant in that minimal-scent preserved state for as long as she's giving them at least a touch of attention each day. In this way, she could potentially, over the course of a month, build a small force of constructs--maybe up to twenty with a simple command (like "Eat brains!" or "Run around and flail your arms in a distracting manner!") or a smaller strike force of around five with more complex ones (more like trained attack dogs).
Since the constructs take energy from Lyla, the more she is feeding, the more lethargic she becomes. Her skin also tends to take on a certain unhealthy pallor, and bruises begin to form in mottled yellow and purple across her skin when she's been using her power extensively. These heal at the same rate as ordinary bruises, and are just as sensitive.
Animated corpses and constructs can be stopped in several ways. If she stops fueling them with her ability (or the charge runs out), they collapse. Exactly how long this takes depends on how much she energy she has infused them with, and how active they are. For whatever reason, the corpses or constructs do require brain matter in order to function. Remove the brain matter from the picture (decapitation or anything that will utterly destroy the head), and the construct will fail. Animated corpses and constructs can also have their ability to move limited by the binding or removing of limbs. (No legs, no walking.)
Hobbies and Interests: Lyla's mother was an MMA fighter, and her father was a costume designer, so she has an eclectic blend of hobbies and interests. On the one hand, her mother insisted from a young age that Lyla learn how to defend herself from any would-be attackers, kidnappers, rapists, and other such scum, so she's a little scrapper. She knows that size matters in a fight, though, and size is definitely not on her rather petite side.
Her father, meanwhile, insisted that she learn how to patch up the holes in whatever clothes she tore while going around being a feisty little scrapper--and later on, she took an interest in costuming and figuring out her own fashion style. Under her father's tutelage, she learned how to sew by hand, and then with a sewing machine. She wouldn't count herself an excellent seamstress, but she enjoys modifying clothes, making them her own.
Background: Lyla's parents met on set in Hollywood, both of them hired on to the crew for an epic fantasy film that started storyboarding in 1997 and was filmed mostly in New Zealand. Her mother was on the stunt team, and her father was part of the costume team. It was an all around epic film, and the perfect place for the two of them to begin an epic romance.
Several years of courtship and a marriage later, Lyla was born, the first of three children in a rather eclectic family. They were a happy family, perhaps in the spirit of the Addams Family, where nothing was particularly "normal," but everyone could be themselves.
Lyla went to a private school, made friends, and lived life, being her spunky self, living a happy human life. Things started to change for her when her cat was hit by a car outside of her home, right in front of her eyes, when she was twelve. She immediately went to the deceased cat's corpse and scooped up the limp form, and though she could tell that her cat was already still, not reacting, she pled for little Samwise to be alive. And then, suddenly, the cat corpse started to move--but only exactly how she willed it to.
She trusted her parents enough to come to them directly, knowing that what had happened was not normal in the least. Her father showed her his mutant ability, and explained that it was important that she keep this secret to herself. There was so much going on within the government, so much to be concerned about.
Things were getting crazy--fast--as Apocalypse and Therizo went head-to-head, and Death came (rather literally) to Southern California. In April 2018, before she even finished her eighth grade year, Lyla's life turned upside down fast.
She doesn't talk about her family died or how she fell in with a group of refugee mutants on the move, heading east across mixed terrain to stay entirely out of the war. For several months, she didn't even talk to them. She stayed on the fringe, and they probably thought she was more than a little bit creepy and intense, even while she tried to figure out her power. One of the others in the group took her under wing, rather literally.
Her name was Shaelyn Aita, and she was from way up north, Washington. She'd once been part of the X-Men, but concern for her family, her tribe, had brought her back to the West Coast. There were several others from her tribe in the refugee group, and all of them were strong assets in helping keep the group moving, alive, headed east and north away from the warzone, the deadly biological weapons, the chaos. Shaelyn was one of the mutants who had a way of standing out, considering her large feathered wings.
Despite the fact that Lyla's ability was eerie beyond all measure, Shae treated Lyla like she was a human being and took an interest in helping Lyla figure out her ability. As they traveled, Lyla slowly gained skill until she was able to form a rear guard and night watch of corpses to be triggered by any incoming attack--an undead warning system. It worked for a while, and between the joint efforts of all of the refugees, the moving camp became more and more like a home.
It wasn't to last. They were spotted, attacked--by who, it didn't really matter to Lyla. Everything was chaos, and though she tried to defend everyone, anyone, only the dead remained. Several times, Shae had told Lyla about the X-men, telling her to seek them out if anything ever happened.
So that was exactly what she did. It was all she had left to do.
Personality: Lyla's lost, essentially, everything. As such, she can be inclined toward melancholy, and she's started to develop a certain guardedness. Growing up, she was almost always happy, at home, safe, part of a community that loved and supported her. She retains a confidence and a certain sense of humor despite the losses she's endured, and she has the potential to open up--or become more jaded--depending on where circumstances next carry her. She's young, and she's learning, but she often carries herself like she's a know-it-all expert who can take care of herself. Lately, in an uncomfortable or unfamiliar situation, she tries to create a safety buffer by having at least one nearby if not present.
Special Notes: Lyla has one particular construct that she tries to keep with her much of the time. She named him Harry. (It's unclear if this is meant to be a joke.) Harry was probably some sort of pug or pug-related designer breed in life. Its short-haired-coat is torn here and there, and greying muscle can be seen underneath. For all intents and purposes, Harry seems to act like a loyal dog companion. Harry hunts pests--including large insects and small rodents. Harry fetches things and seems to like playing ball. Harry even gives out an eerie sort of warning bark when someone approaches. Lyla doesn't seem to mind recharging Harry at all. When Harry is not active, Harry is likely to be found somewhere near wherever Lyla's sleeping area is, still as the dead.
