Task 1 - Refraction through perspex block
Examine how light behaves as to passes through the perspex block. trace around the block and draw rays to show the incident and refracted rays. Does the ray bend toward or away from the normal when it travels from air to perspex. Indicate this on your diagram.
Task 2 - Snell's Law
Using the semicircular prism, aiming the ray at the mid point of the flat side, trace around the block and mark the normal at the mid point.
Take a series of measurement gradually increasing the angle of incidence (make sure you achieve at least 8 readings between 0 and 90 degrees) marking the refracted ray each time. Use a protractor to measure each corresponding angle of refraction and then tabulate your data.
Find sin(i) and sin(r) of the data and do a scatter plot.
Describe the shape of the graph. How does this relate to Snell's law?
