Relative motion

You will use your understanding of relative motion to determine the speed of a moving hand. The set up below requires you to choose the mass of the bob to overcome friction and then a little more so it does not run too fast. Use blue tack or plasticine to adjust the mass. If you have the correct mass the trolley should be able to sit as rest or move and constant speed cross the bench when given a nudge.

Make sure you have Dig 1 connected to the motion sensor:

Collect the data...

VPQ = VP - VQ

Analysis:

What values have you gathered?

Allocate a positive direction, list the data.

Determine the velocity of your hand

What would happen to VPQ if the trolley goes faster?

What happens to VPQ if your hand goes faster?
