In this investigation we aim to determine the elastic constant for four different types of jelly snake
You will measure the force due to gravity vs extension of four snakes. Plot the data and find the gradient of any linear section. From this we can say which snake is the softest and which is a stiffest.
1. Can you use your force extension graph to determine the elastic constant for the snake?
2. What are the limitations of this measurement?
3. If the snake is stretched uniformly by 2.3 cm, what elastic energy has the snake gained?
The area under the graph can be used to also determine the work done on the snake.
4. If the snake being eaten by someone, is stretched 3.5 cm and then suddenly released, it will fly up and hit the person eating it in the face. At what speed does it hit the person? Estimate values to do the calculation.
5. Which is the safest snake t eat?
