Standing waves and measuring the speed of waves on a spring

In this task you will observe and measure a standing wave. You will need to take images or video using tracker.

Part A

1. Extend your spring and measure the distance

2. Set the simplest standing wave on the spring. Find the time for 10 oscillations and record the number of half wavelength.

3. Set up the next harmonic frequency. Find the time for 10 oscillations and record the number of half wavelength.

4. Continue this process and complete the table below.

Questions

1. How does the frequency change for each subsequent increase in 1/2 waves

2. Can you give a geometric pattern to predict the wave length for the nth number of 1/2 waves.

3. Can you prove algebraically that the speed v should be the same.
