Unit 3 Physics SAC 3 - AOS 2 How are fields used to move electrical energy?
In this task you will use two models you create in class to analyze and and explain electrical generation. The models will be created in excel and use the relationships and concepts we study in the area to show how we create and transmit electricity.
The scope of the SAC is as follows:
2 lessons to develop and run your models (not particularly in a row).
50 minutes task using your models to respond to questions about a generation and transmission system.
Model 1
The first model will use Faraday and Lenz’ law to show how a rotating loop in a wire is used to generating an alternating current. The model will allow you to change input values of dimensions of loop, number of loops and strength of magnetic field.
From this model you will need to create EMF vs period graph and then generate data on how changes in the input values affect the size of the EMF produced.
Model 2
The second model will use your understanding of electrical transmission to set up a system using step-up and step down transformers, examine the power losses and make changes to minimise loss.
This model will enable you to input voltages, change turns ratio and resistance per meter of wire allowing you to gather data on power loss minimization with cost effectiveness.
