Motion Lesson 18 - Energy transfer

OUTCOME

By the end of the lesson you will be able to recognise and apply the different relationships used in the study of mechanical energy: gravitational potential, kinetic, elastic potential energy. You will be able to recognise and use Hooke's law and use a force displacement graph to recognise elastic behaviour.

Reading p. 385-390

Gravitational potential energy is the energy an object gains when it is moved to a height, Ep = mgh. Kinetic energy is the energy gained by an object when it starts to move,

Ek = ½ mv2

Elastic potential energy is the energy stored in an object due to the deformation of that object.

In a spring, the force that opposed the deformation can be found using F = -kx
