Making music - Lesson 2

OUTCOME

By the end of the lesson you will recognise the terms loudness, pitch and timbre and how they relate to the shape and size of a sound wave.

Sound waves are caused by the variation in air particles longitudinally but to illustrate a sound wave we illustrate the pressure variations. Pitch is the result of the frequency of the sound, loudness is reflected in a waves amplitude

Timbre is what makes the same pitch of a note sound different when made by different instruments. It is due to different wave shapes with the same frequency

LEARNING TASKS

Explain

What feature of a wave form is loudness associated with?

What is the difference in waveform of a low pitch sound to a high pitch sound/?

Why does middle C on a piano sound different to the same note played on a flute?
