Teacher supports a group of students as they solve problems
Guided Mathematics (Strategy and Strand teaching) is at the heart of a balanced Mathematics programme. It gives the teacher and a group of students the opportunity to talk, explore, and think their way purposefully through mathematical problems and tasks.
In Guided Mathematics sessions, the teacher works with one group at a time and all students participate in the thinking and the explanation of their thinking. A balanced Mathematics programme is usually one hour long and happens every day (Monday - Friday). Group instruction may take 45-50 minutes of this time.
Rotations are an effective way of managing a balanced Mathematics programme.
It is important that, no matter what age a student is, students move through these phases, starting from 'Using Materials' until they can make abstractions.
See the Numeracy Book 3 (listed below) for more details about this. Books 5, 6, and 7 also contain information about this too in the context of each book's focus.
These Numeracy Books are invaluable, providing many learning experiences that effectively move students through the Strategy Teaching Model.
