This is an overarching Emergency Overview Procedure. Contained within this procedure are the following sub-procedures:

Drills should be completed regularly to ensure familiarity.
If the telephone is working, it should NOT be used for anything else apart from contacting emergency services when there is a life threatening situation. (Civil Defence instruction) If the phone is NOT working use a cell phone, if one is available.
The following procedures are to be reviewed and made familiar to staff every year.

Procedure to be followed when a fire cannot be easily extinguished.
Act on civil defence warning signal.
If necessary, Principal to contact civil defence staff.
Listen to local radio station.
Keep occupants inside unless instructed otherwise.
Take roll call.
Liaise with Principal regarding decision to evacuate.
Turn off appliances and services.
If the telephone is working, it should not be used for anything else apart from contacting emergency services when there is a life-threatening situation.
Store or secure loose items such as rubbish bins, outdoor furniture and corrugated iron.
Stick tape across large windows to prevent shattering.
Stay inside strongest part of building.
If outside, seek shelter to avoid flying debris.
Open windows on side of the building AWAY from the wind to reduce the likelihood of the roof lifting.
If the telephone is working, it should not be used for anything else apart from contacting emergency services when there is a life-threatening situation.
If inside a building, stay away from metal and electrical fixtures.
If outside, stay clear of trees.
