PURPOSE
To prepare the children and staff for the possibility of an Earthquake.
PROCEDURE
All occupants should remain in the building until shaking stops.
If outside, occupants should move clear of building, power poles, overhead power lines and trees.
Occupants should take cover, eg - beside desks, tables and away from windows.
Staff to liaise with Principal regarding decision to remain in building or evacuate.
If decision is made to evacuate, teacher should:
Supervise the evacuation as per the Fire Evacuation Scheme
Listen to local radio station.
6. If decision is made NOT to evacuate staff must check for ‘hidden’ hazards eg., broken glass, wires, pipes; fallen or damaged timber and supports, and shelves etc., and keep all persons isolated from these danger areas.
7. If the telephone is working, it should not be used for anything else apart from contacting emergency services when there is a life-threatening situation.
DRILLS
Once a year a full drill (including evacuation) is to be held
Teacher calls out “Earthquake” and tells the children to Drop, Cover and Hold. This is the recommendation from Civil Defence.
After 30 seconds, the all clear is given and the teacher ends the drill.
At the next mat time, a review of the drill is covered and children are encourages to practice the Drop, Cover, Hold position
Teachers to follow the drill and once the all clear is given after 30 seconds, they are to follow the evacuation procedure.
