Purpose
To provide a safe and supportive environment for students and staff to access guidance and counselling when needed, ensuring emotional wellbeing and appropriate referral pathways.
Procedures and Guidelines
Students should be encouraged to approach their parents/guardians first when facing difficulties, if they feel comfortable doing so.
Provide a trained and trusted adult (e.g., school chaplain) who is available to listen and support students experiencing difficulties. In addition, a trained counsellor is available through the Chatbus service to provide professional support for students. Parental permission is required before a student can access Chatbus counselling.
Counselling focuses on active listening and support – not giving advice, analysing, or solving problems.
Guidance supports decision-making in practical areas such as subject choices, career pathways, and job seeking. Students may be referred to appropriate specialists when necessary.
Students may approach any teacher, the chaplain, or the principal if they have concerns, anxiety, or need to disclose something.
In the event of a Critical Incident, the staff member must notify the Principal, who will contact the Education Services Trauma Team (Phone: 03 218 2442 – 24 hours).
Staff may also seek support through Oranga Tamariki (Phone: 0508 326 459) if child safety concerns arise.
Students can also contact Kids Line at 0800 543754
Staff can also access counselling services through the EAP (Employee Assistance Programme). This service is confidential and free of charge for staff, offering support for personal or work-related issues, including stress, grief, conflict, or mental health concerns. Staff can self-refer by contacting EAP directly via their website or phone number, or speak with the Principal for guidance on how to access this support.
