First Aid

CAUTION Follow these Infectious Disease Guidelines

Treat ALL blood and body fluids as infected.  ie. blood, vomit, saliva, urine, faeces

1. Do NOT delay blood loss treatment. Get the child to put pressure on the wound themselves, or use a handkerchief, paper towel, towel etc.

2. Wash hands before and after treatment

3. Cover ALL your own cuts and abrasions/wear gloves

4. Sterilise all surfaces and instruments.  Use measuring bottle from the First Aid kit to make up 1 part bleach to 9 parts cold water. Make fresh each time.  Soak surfaces for 20 minutes and then dry.

DISPOSE OF ALL SOILED MATERIALS IN ‘SNAP LOCK’ BAG AND PUT IN BIN YOURSELF

GUIDELINES

1. When an accident occurs the child will be assessed for injury.

2. If the injury is serious a doctor or ambulance will be called and the child taken for future treatment to a medical centre or hospital.

3. If the injury is minor, treatment will be provided by a staff member with current First Aid training.

4. For major incidents: Fill out the detailed First Aid Register using Google Docs

5. Contact parents and advise them of the incident

SERIOUS INJURY INCLUDES

• Fracture

• Gouged eye

• Burns

• Drowning

• Poisoning

• Any treatment requiring pain medication

• Any treatment requiring hospital care

ADMINISTERING AND RECORDING OF MEDICATION

1. Only adults may administer medication to a student 

2. Parents must make contact with the school and advise of any medication needed for their children with the details of how this is to be administered

3. Medication is to be kept in a locked drawer in the front office

4. When medication is administered it is to be recorded in the Student Medication Book in the drawer

5. No medicine is to be administered without agreement with caregivers

6. Changes in the medication administration or dosage need to be made in writing

7. If any change in student behaviour is noticed or physical effects appear (eg rashes), parents/caregivers should be notified promptly

8. In the event of a staff member needing to administer Asthma medication the parent/caregiver should be notified at the earliest opportunity on the same day
