Rationale
Road Safety is an aspect of the children’s education, which is a shared responsibility between the school and the parents. It should ensure the safe arrival of the children at school and their safe arrival after school.
Purposes
To inform and educate all children on aspects of road safety pertaining also to their walking and or cycling to and from school.
To educate children in safe and considerate conduct on school outings using buses.
To inform parents of acceptable and safe transport of children to and from extra- curricular and sporting activities.
To encourage Police visits to reinforce safety procedures.
Guidelines
Visits by Police Education Officers to the classrooms and subsequent follow-up visits by class teachers on an as needed basis.
Emphasise safe road crossing procedures and safe walkways.
All cyclists must wear an approved safety helmet at all times.
Emphasise safe practices when getting on and off buses.
Parents transporting children to extra-curricular and sporting activities must provide a seat belt for each passenger. Where private motor vehicles are used for school trips, each vehicle must have a current registration and Warrant of Fitness; and the driver must hold a full and current driver’s licence.
Conclusion:
Road safety procedures are a lifetime necessity, which we as a school can help to establish firmly, at an early age, for the present and future benefit of our pupils.
